Big changes for Launchpad INW

Big things are happening at Launchpad INW ,for those who may not be familiar with Launchpad INW, The business/ web site is a Spokane based operation that was Spokane's first online professional business networking community. At one time Launchpad INW operated a website , a co working space and even had a special segment on KHQ's Invest Northwest TV show called Launch Spokane.

But overtime the site and business have gone somewhat by the wayside. Both of the owners of the site have moved on to other employment with large local firm's. But a recent e-mail to members has uncovered a new plan for Launchpad INW.

Last Friday was the last day online for the former web site and now, with thanks too local web site developer Zipline Interactive, the website will re launch as an online local news source for " innovation , leadership and entrepreneurship " . The site will use the wordpress blogging format.

The new site is set to be live now and will also include a weekly e-mail newsletter called Launchpad News.

For more info on Launchpad INW visit their web site at-

www.launchpadinw.com

Note: Although our formats and goals are now similar, Inland Northwest Business Watch is in no way affiliated with Launchpad. We at INBW are not here to compete only to inform the Spokane area on local business happenings.

Construction at former Burgan's Furniture building to begin soon.

After 5 years of waiting for a more prime local economy, and planning out the best uses, Spokane businessman Gerald Dicker is ready. Ready to begin construction on a massive remodel of the former Burgan's Furniture store and warehouse on Division St just blocks north of Downtown Spokane.

Dicker, who is well known in the Spokane business community due to other developments acquired the large vacant building in 2008 and at one time even considered moving forward with a plan for a large hotel on the site. Plans for the hotel have since gone by the wayside. No doubt in part due to Walt Worthy's massive hotel tower project proposed for the parking lot across from the INB Performing Arts Center nearby.

Construction work at the former furniture store site is expected to begin within 2 months and cost between 9 and 12 million dollars to complete. A tentative completion date is set for the Summer of 2014.

The remodeling project will transform the building into 46 1 bedroom apartment units in the upper floors and a ground floor commercial area with 2 restaurant spaces and another space for a retail tenant. Also the project will have a conference area, meeting rooms and a fitness center. The apartments will be geared towards and extended stay for corporate and other's who may be around to long for a hotel but not long enough for a full residence.

The project is located along N. Division in between Division and Ruby and just south of Boone Ave. The project is actually made up of 2 buildings that we're both once used by Burgan's Furniture, a skyway will connect the 2 buildings and the remainder of the block will be filled by parking for the site.

Total Wine & More coming to Spokane Valley

It's official , Spokane Valley will get a new Total Wine & More store later this year. The Total Wine & More chain opening a store in the Valley has been on the radar from since last year when the chain opened it's only other location in the Spokane market. That store is now one of the highest selling liquor retailers in Spokane County and is located just north of The Y on Newport Hwy in the Northpointe Shopping Center in North Spokane.

Total Wine & More's Spokane Valley store will be a new construction building in the Evergreen Crossing shopping center which is just west of Spokane Valley Mall and while not fully completed, the shopping center is also home to major stores like Hobby Lobby, Great Floors ,Fred's Appliance and others. Total Wine & More's new building in the center will be at 13802 E. Indiana Ave. directly next to Great Floors and easily visible from I-90 near the Evergreen Rd. exit.

The new store will occupy 25,000 square feet of space and will employ around 40. The new store's location is strategic to attract customers from North Idaho who are looking for more selection. And once a state distribution tax is scaled back , the pricing in Washington will compete more evenly with stores in Kootenai County and elsewhere.

Selection is the name of the game for Total Wine & More. The Maryland based chain bills itself as America's Wine Superstore and while wine and wine tastings are big part of the business, the stores also feature full liquor selection a extensive beer selection with a growler filling station in store.

The new store is expected to open sometime in November, in time for the holiday season.

Black Sheep Sporting Goods moves to new home

Back in May we reported on the move of the Black Sheep Sporting Goods' outlet store to the large stand alone store building where Wholesale Sports once was next to Costco in Coeur d' Alene ( That post can be found here- http://www.inlandnwbusiness.com/2013/05/black-sheep-sporting-goods-opens-outlet.html ).

But the move of the outlet store was only temporary and apparently a place holder of sorts for the move of the entire Black Sheep Sporting Goods store into the space. Black Sheep is now open in the former Wholesale Sports location at 3534 N. Government Way by Costco and only a stone's throw east from the former store location off of Seale Dr facing US 95. The new store no longer faces US 95 but does have a good location on busy Government Way with lots of parking and close by  to many other stores.

The new building is 47,000 square feet and is much newer then the stores former home. The new Black Sheep will continue to operate as the same locally owned and operated sporting goods store with merchandise ranging from hunting and fishing to marine needs to even firearm sales. Hours of operation for the store are Monday thru Saturday 9am - 7pm and Sunday 9am - 6pm.

A grand opening celebration is planned at the new Black Sheep Sporting Goods location on Government Way for Friday June 28th and Saturday June 29th. The celebration will feature prizes, games and specials thruout the store.

As far as what will happen to the old store location, signs are up now showing it as the new Black Sheep Sporting Goods outlet store. However the new outlet store is not open as of yet. And there is no word right now as to what will go into the currently empty space that at one time was the outlet store across the parking lot from the old store.

Total Wine & More is a chain of wine, beer & liquor big box stores that is best known locally for the companies location in North Spokane at the former Borders Bookstore space in the North Pointe Shopping Center. Broadwing Apartments going up in Liberty Lake

Earlier today on this site we posted about all the new apartment projects underway in Coeur d' Alene. But Coeur d' Alene is from being the only area in the Inland Northwest that's adding new multi-family housing. And one spot that's caught this business blogger's attention is the new Broadwing Apartments . Broadwing in now under construction in Liberty Lake, in fact buildings are up and inside work is well under way. The project is currently on track to begin leasing later this Summer or Fall.

Broadwing Apartments are being built on a new street called Spotted Owl Ln. which can be found directly next to the Talon Hills Senior Apartments off of Appleway on the town's far east side. The site is visible from Appleway and I-90,although it does take a bit of looking.

Broadwing is being built by Whitewater Creek Inc. , a development company located in Hayden that has constructed several other local apartment complexes. Whitewater Creek is also the company behind 2 other complexes that are all within a few 1000 feet of the Broadwing's site. Those complexes are the fore mentioned Talon Hills Senior Apartments and the First Liberty Apartments, a newer family apartment community directly on Appleway.

Broadwing , Like the other 2 will be income restricted and will be leased to families. To qualify for an apartment one must not make over a certain amount in income and rental rates are set on what one makes.

50 apartments will be included in the new complex and 1 , 2 and 3 bedroom units will be available. Because the complex is not yet open contact info for leasing is also not available, however some info may be able to obtained via First Liberty Aparments, their web site is-

Carrington Place at the Landings, new apartments coming to Coeur d' Alene

With the first units officially opened to the public for leasing at the beginning of June a lot more new apartments will soon be available in what is , for now, Coeur d' Alene's newest apartment complex. The complex goes by the name Carrington Place At The Landings and is located along Carrington Drive in The Landings residential development along Prairie Ave. in between Atlas and Huetter Roads on the north side of the city.

Carrington Place is being developed by The Land Co. a locally based real estate development firm and leasing of the rental units will be done by Resort Property Management, also of Coeur d' Alene. Contact info for leasing is available at the end of this post or of the complexes web site, also listed below.

Once fully built out the project will include 132 apartments built in 22 separate 6 unit buildings. The project will however be built out in phases with the first phase consisting of only 60 apartments. Also in phase 1 will be a community club house that will feature over 2,000 square feet of space with a rec. area, on site manager's office, work out room and a kitchen. The community is also directly across the street from Landings Park, a city park that is free for all to use.

Apartments come with washers and dryers and all appliances included. Garages are also available with the units. Apartment prices at Carrington Place range from 735 to 915 a month and 1, 2 and 3 bedroom units are all available.

Apartment complexes are in high demand currently in the Coeur d' Alene and Spokane area and this is just one of several apartment projects underway in the area. 2 other brand new complexes have construction underway elsewhere in Coeur d' Alene and another is almost doubling in size. We also expect construction to start in Downtown Coeur d' Alene this year on a brand new high rise apartment tower.

The Q at Northern Quest Casino to become Epic Sports Resturant?

This is a follow up to previous post here on Inland Northwest Business Watch. A couple of months back we reported on the remodeling of Northern Quest Casino's The Q Sports Bar and now that remodel is nearing it's completion.

But we have also received info that The Q will no longer be The Q, instead the bar and restaurant will be called Epic Sports Restaurant . Also the former studio area of the establishment will become Studio E.

Although it's very short notice the Casino and Spokane radio station Rock 94.5 will host a sneak peak of the new Epic and Studio E tonight from 5:30 till 7:30. More on that sneak peak can be found here-

http://tweetvite.com/event/EPICSpo

For more on the remodel of The Q / Epic at Northern Quest Casino below is the original post from May 13th 2013-

If you've visited Northern Quest Casino lately you may have noticed the signage near The Q Sports Bar stating that "something epic is coming" . But what exactly is coming? Turns out the something epic is a sizable re-model of the well known sports themed bar and restaurant.

Construction crews are already busy working in the business and if all goes as planned the new pieces of the The Q will be ready in time for a grand opening sometime in June . The remodel will include...

-Remodeled booth and bar areas.

-Upgraded seating with additional semi-private dining.

-Newly renovated event spaces.

-New menu options

and probably the biggest change will be a new private entry from The Q to the Legends of Fire Cigar Bar which is located in space on the 2nd floor of the casino almost directly above The Q.

The Q inside Northern Quest has made a name for itself as one of the largest sports bars in the Spokane area and for having one of the largest TVs in the area at 106". The huge TV is able to able to stream up to 7 different sports stations at one time.

The Q is located by the parking lot entry to the Casino at Northern Quest Casino. Northern Quest is located at 100 N. Hayford Rd. in Airway Heights.

Bistro Box food truck relocates to Spokane

Spokane's food truck scene is getting hotter every month, with new trucks hitting the road frequently, and many more in the works right now. Ok, sure Spokane is no Portland when it comes to street food but the food trucks and carts we do have are creating quite a buzz themselves.

And soon joining the local lists of Spokane food trucks is The Bistro Box . The Bistro Box is not new, in fact the business gathered a good following in the truck's hometown of Renton,Wa. . The business is moving to Spokane because of the owners family is in this part of the state.

The Bistro Box is a sandwich truck with a wide menu that includes diner style sandwiches, kobe beef sliders, salads and fries. According to the businesses website (which is listed below) the truck also does catering ,it can only be assumed this portion of the business will continue here is Spokane.

Longtime motorsports business, Roundy's closes in North Spokane

After 35 years of operation Roundy's last day of business occurred earlier this month. Roundy's went out of business in part due to the economy and the owner's retirement. The business has operated in Spokane for the companies entire life and for most of that time span as Roundy's Kawasaki. The Kawasaki name was dropped only a few years ago when the business ended the Kawasaki affiliation to focus more on it's Can Am motorcycle and Sea Doo Watercraft sales.

Roundy's was located at 11008 N Newport Hwy in Mead and stayed a family business until the last day.

As far as the future of Roundy's former business location, that is a bright spot in the closure as the retail building on the businesses former site has been already leased. The new tenant will be the Mead School District who is planning to use the building in the near future for it's STEM vocational school programs.

Mead School District will do only minor work to the building to bring it up to par for the new educational use. The school district hopes to move in sometime in July and will continue some of it's STEM schooling programs at the current Riverpoint Acadamy in Spokane's University District.

Kootenai River Inn Hotel and Casino opens it's latest expansion

A lot has changed for the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho since they first opened their Kootenai River Inn in Bonners Ferry some 26 years ago. Today the once small riverside hotel is now also a casino and one of the largest employers in the sparsely populated Boundary County,Idaho some 90 miles north of the Coeur d' Alene / Spokane metro area.

Even though the casino and hotel are a bit of drive from most of the Northwest's larger cities the property does still bring in many looking to get away and with it's close proximity to the Canadian border the Kootenai River Inn has also proven to be a hotspot for tourist's and retiree's from the north.

Now something new at Kootenai River Inn is proving to be yet another attractant. The Kootenai Tribe recently opened a new expansion to the property called Kootenai Falls Lodge . Kootenai Falls Lodge adds 36 new hotel rooms to the Kootenai River Inn hotel, which operates as a part of the multi-national Best Western Hotel system. With the new hotel expansion the Kootenai River Inn now has 101 hotel rooms in addition to the casino, a on site spa, meeting rooms, indoor pool, business center and the popular Springs Resturant.

The new guest rooms in the Kootenai Falls Lodge include keurig coffee makers , large new TV's and walk in showers among many other amenities.

While the new hotel rooms are the highlight of the recently opened expansion they are certainly not the only new things at Kootenai River Inn. The main lodge underwent renovations during construction with new flooring and a new patio overlooking the Kootenai River. Behind the scenes the property also added a new laundry facility and a new manitance facility was also added.

Kootenai River Inn is located just off of US 95 at 7169 Plaza St in Bonners Ferry. For more info on the hotel/casino visit their web site at-

Former Kia of Spokane dealership to become a church

The former location of Kia of Spokane has been sold and is now being remodeled to serve a new purpose as a church. The dealership site, which is at 21326 E. Mission Ave in Liberty Lake was sold to Cornerstone Pentecostal Church for a cost of 1.9 million.

The dealership has been vacant since late 2011 when Kia of Spokane was acquired by the George Gee Auto Group and moved to the former Hummer dealer space on George Gee Dr. nearby the site in Liberty Lake. The Cornerstone Pentecostal Church has extensive remodeling plans which are already well underway. Included in the work on the building is a 9,000 square foot sanctuary that will take the place of much of the former service department.

The remodel will also create a new lobby area and offices. The church has about 300 members and is moving to the site from 12817 E. Broadway in Spokane Valley. No official word on when the first services would take place.

Crosspointe Autoplex in Airway Heights expands

The Crosspointe Autoplex has come along way since it's start as a dealer to dealer automotive wholesaler when they first opened their doors in 2002. In 2006 they chose to open their door to public for the first time and although they've operated out of a small temporary modular building since then the dealership has managed to find success.

But now the Crosspointe Autoplex has moved up to the " big leagues" of Spokane auto dealerships with the opening last month of their new, much bigger building. The new building is on the same site as the previous building allowing the dealer to expand and maintain and more respectable permanent business location without having to relocate. The business remains at 10505 W. Sunset Hwy , across from the Wal-Mart shopping center in Airway Heights.

The new building at Crosspointe Autoplex has also allowed the dealer to expand the sales lot allowing for more cars, trucks, vans and suv's to be sold. Also the new building features something not available at the former shop, a full service department. Crosspointe now also offers a full auto repair shop staffed by ASE certified technician's.
