The Old European Express coming soon in Coeur d' Alene

The Old European Express is a new restaurant affiliated with the Old European Breakfast House in Post Falls that's coming soon to Coeur d' Alene. The new place will be located in a new construction building at 3112 N. Government Way, just a little bit south of Costco in Coeur d' Alene. Construction at the site is already underway, with the owners hoping to be open there sometime later this year although there is no opening date set just yet. CTD Construction is the general contractor for the project with ML Architecture doing the design work.

I'm told the menu of Old European Express will consist of the same high quality, fresh ingredients, and specialty coffee, now just available later and on the go. For instance, their signature sourdough is made in house with non-GMO organic flour made with a real starter. Locally sourced ingredients, fresh squeezed OJ and lemonade will be included as will a great coffee program as they claim to be passionate about great coffee.

In addition to the Old European Express restaurant, the same owners are also planning a second full-service location of their restaurant in Hayden soon. That location is planned to open later in 2026 as well and will be at 12560 N. Warren St. in Hayden, nearby the intersection of US 95 and Lancaster.

A local developer, and owner of the Coeur d' Alene based Big Tree Construction is currently planning a new mixed-use project on E. Sherman Ave. in Coeur d' Alene. The building is planned to start construction later this year at 1801 E. Sherman Ave. a few blocks east of Downtown Coeur d' Alene.

The new building is currently going by the name The Wilder and will be three stories tall. The upper floors of the new building will be divided into 8 short term style rentals. The ground floor will offer up approximately 3000 square feet of new commercial space. Part of the commercial space will be occupied by a new business called Ink and Easel Fine Art Gallery; the remaining commercial space will be leased with it likely be geared towards a new restaurant tenant.

A unique aspect of the new Wilder mixed-use project is the rooftop. They plan on building out a lounge space, sauna and cold plunge on the roof for the tenants to use. They also plan to rent out the rooftop space to others for events once completed. Big Tree Construction will act as the general contractor for this new development project.

Encompass Health plans 50-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Post Falls

Last month, Birmingham, Alabama based Encompass Health Corp. (NYSE:EHC) announced plans to build a freestanding, 50-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Post Falls. The new hospital will be built on a parcel within the Jacklin Ranch development northeast of the intersection of Prairie Ave. & Hwy. 41 in Post Falls. Noteworthy is that Encompass Health development site is only a stone through north of the planned new Kootenai Health Prairie Medical Campus, which will one day be a sprawling medical center campus with specialties, full hospital services and more in a joint venture between Kootenai Health and Multicare.

The new Post Falls Encompass Health hospital will serve patients recovering from debilitating illness and injuries, including stroke and other neurological conditions, brain and spinal cord injuries, amputations and complex orthopedic issues. In addition to 24-hour nursing care, the hospital will provide physical, occupational and speech therapies to help patients restore function and improve their quality of life. Care will be delivered by specialized nurses, therapists and physicians. The new hospital will include private patient rooms, a large therapy gym equipped with advanced rehabilitation technology, an activity of daily living suite, and in-house dialysis suite, a dining room, a pharmacy and an outdoor therapy courtyard.

The Post Falls Encompass Health facility is currently planned to open sometime in 2028, joining Encompass' large nationwide network of other rehabilitation hospitals. This will be the company's second location in Idaho as they already operate the existing Saint Alphonsus Regional Rehabilitation Hospital in Boise.

Spice Market now open in Spokane Valley

A few weeks ago, a new store selling authentic Indian groceries and other similar items opened in Spokane Valley. The new store is locally owned and operated and goes by the name Spice Market. They tell me their new store is a full-blown Indian grocery store with grocery and produce offerings from India and other Asian countries.

The store is roughly 2700 square feet and is located nearby the Spokane Valley Costco store and the Spokane County Fairgrounds at 5320 E. Sprague Ave. The new store carries all types of grocery items, spices, lentils, snacks, sweets, drinks, flour, frozen and refrigerated goods.
