Several businesses closing /moving at Northtown Mall

It is important to note that Northtown Mall in Spokane is far from being a dead mall,in fact there has even been a few new store openings at the mall. But it's easy to notice that several stores have left Northtown since the start of the year. Why are these stores moving out of Northtown? That's unclear but most have went on to other, bigger locations. A rumor has swirled around that Northtown has increased it's rent, although this has not been confirmed.

Here is some of the store closings and moves that have happened at Northtown Mall...

Select Comfort

Select Comfort, which is known for it's sleep number brand of mattresses is leaving Northtown Mall soon. The store, which had been on the 1st floor of the mall by Barnes & Noble is moving to the former Perkins Restaurant building a couple of blocks north of the mall on Division.

The Perkins building is being remodeled for 2 retail units of which Select Comfort will take 1. Select Comfort also made a similar move in Spokane Valley,There they left Spokane Valley Mall for the Evergreen Crossing Shopping Center at the corner of Evergreen Rd and Indiana Ave.

Century Link

The phone / Internet / television company Century Link has also left Northtown Mall. The company had operated a kiosk on the 1st floor of the mall below the food court. Century Link now has it's own store that just recently celebrated a grand opening. Century Link's move is also similar to the move made by Select Comfort because they also left Spokane Valley Mall around the same time.

Century Link's new storefronts can be found at...
6704 N. Nevada St in Spokane  or 506 N. Sullivan Rd. in Spokane Valley

Bumpers Family Fun Center

The move of Bumpers was probably the most noticeable of all the stores to leave Northtown Mall since the start of 2013. To find out more about Bumpers leaving Northtown look at this previous post here on Inland Northwest Business Watch...
http://www.inlandnwbusiness.com/2013/01/updated-info-bumpers-family-fun-center.html

Chrome

Chrome Personal Training Centre has moved out of Northtown Mall. The business which offers fitness training and classes was located on the first floor of the mall nearby Macy's and the paintball business.

Chrome has since re-opened a new bigger gym space in Spokane. Chrome can now be found at 206 E. North Foothills Dr.

Wholesale Sports

As of the time of writing this the Northtown Mall Wholesale Sports store is scheduled to close on March 10th. . Wholesale Sports occupies on the mall's several anchor spots on the first floor by Sears. The space was once filled by a Steve & Barry's until that business closed also,in that case Steve & Barry's closed all stores nationwide.

For more info on the closing of the Spokane Wholesale Sports check out this prior post here on Inland Northwest Business Watch...

Bruchi's Cheesesteaks and Subs

Bruchi's has left their food court space, the space has now been filled with a Subway location. More on that business switch in this prior Inland Northwest Business Watch post-
http://www.inlandnwbusiness.com/2013/02/bruchis-leaves-spokane-area.html

However in all the doom and gloom that comes from stores leaving the mall, several more are coming. Subway recently opened in the food court , as will an Asian restaurant called Miso. Retail wise Earthbound Trading Company is now open on the 2nd floor and signs are positive that work is starting on a new business for the space that was The Comic Book Store.

Wholesale Sports to close in Spokane/ Coeur d' Alene.

The Canadian based big box sporting goods chain Wholesale Sports has announced they plan to close their stores in both Spokane and Coeur d' Alene. The stores will end business as Wholesale Sports on March 10th. The closure includes both it's stores in Coeur d' Alene ( on Government Way, in front on Costco) and the store at the Northtown Mall in Spokane.

The Northtown Mall location had just relocated last year from a shopping plaza space near the Spokane Valley Mall to the new in-mall location at Northtown. The parent company of Wholesale Sports, Calgary,AB based UFA Co-Operative Ltd. is closing it's US retail interests to refocus on it's main stores across Canada.

Some of the Wholesale Sports stores in the US will revert back to Sportsman's Warehouse which was the original owner of the stores in Spokane and Coeur d' Alene. 4 stores in the US ,including the local Wholesale Sports locations will close altogether.

The Northtown Mall Wholesale Sports store employs about 40 and the Coeur d' Alene location about 35,no word on the status of those employees.

Shut down Knitting Factory to re-open

In case you haven't already heard on the top news topics in Spokane has been the shut down of the popular Downtown Spokane concert house / bar The Knitting Factory.

The Knitting Factory, which is located on W. Sprague Ave. , in the middle of the Davenport Arts District, was shut down earlier this week by Spokane Police acting on orders by Police Chief Frank Straub to close down the venue because of several shootings that have taken place in the immediate neighborhood over the past year.Straub believes the shootings are in significant issue of public safety for the people who live, work and play in the neighborhood on the western edge of Downtown Spokane.

The City of Spokane and the Spokane Police Department are able to shut down establishments due to their authority over entertainment permits.

However Spokane Police along with the CEO of The Knitting Factory's California based parent company, Knitting Factory Entertainment have reached an agreement and announced earlier today that The Knitting Factory is now officially back open.

The closure effected only venue itself, the newly opened District Bar located in the same building as The Knitting Factory never closed as it is a separate business.

360 Fitness expands,to open at Riverstone

Coeur d' Alene's 360 Fitness is growing. 360's Coeur d' Alene location had been in the Mountain View Shopping Center, behind Texas Roadhouse at the corner of Neider and US 95 for the last couple of years but they must be doing something right because that mid sized gym is now becoming one of Coeur d' Alene's largest in a new remodel and move that began late last year.

People looking to work out / lose weight won't find 360 Fitness in that space on Neider anymore as they have relocated back to a much larger space in Downtown Coeur d' Alene. 360 Fitness has taken over the former Coeur d' Alene Athletic Club at the corner of 2nd Ave. and Coeur d' Alene Ave just 2 blocks north of Sherman.

The new Downtown 360 Fitness location is much larger then the gym's old home and now offers features new to 360's members like a basketball court and a indoor swimming pool. Also in the works is a verity of new work out equipment as well as upgraded TV's and security systems, the Downtown location will also soon be open 24 hours. In the acquisition all of the Coeur d' Alene Athletic Club's members have also become members of the new 360 Fitness.

The new Downtown gym isn't the only big news at 360 as 360 Fitness will also open a second location soon at Riverstone. The Riverstone 360 Fitness location will occupy the space on Main St. that was originally configured for a Barnes & Noble but due to the economy that store never was actually completed. The 360 Fitness location at Riverstone will open sometime in the spring and will have a primarily personal training focus.

Currently no new tenants have been announced for the the gym's former location on Neider.

Recent area business closings for Feb 15th 2013-

2013 sure is shaping up to a big year for local business news with several major and well known businesses expanding and unfortunately some closings, here are some of the most notable-

Hillyard Variety

Hillyard Variety's landmark red and blue sign has sat over the shop at 5009 N. Market St in Spokane's Hillyard neighborhood for sometime. But the store which sells gifts, collectibles and a "variety" of other new and used merchandise items will close soon. It's not known when their last day will be but a Facebook post by the store mentions a closing liquidation sale going on now.

Savory Restaurant

Savory Restaurant was an nice restaurant that was sort of the talk of the town when it first opened in 2010. However the restaurant ,somewhat expectantly, closed a couple of weeks ago. They we're on the South Hill at 1314 S. Grand Ave.

Moondollars Restaurant

Moondollars Coffee House at 609 N Syringa St. in Post Falls has closed. The closure of Moondollars also was unexpected, signs posted on the doors and on the shop's voice mail indicate they will be closed "until further notice" . I am looking into this closure as I've received a couple of reader inquiry's on this topic.

Also...

Pac Sun has closed in Silver Lake Mall in Coeur d' Alene, other Spokane area Pac Sun clothing stores remain open

Lady Foot Locker has closed in Spokane Valley Mall, the store has consolidated with the chain's remaining Northtown Mall location.

The Comic Book Store has new bigger location

As a blogger I think most of the inlandnwbusiness.com readers will not be surprised when I admit i'm a bit of geek from time to time. So I had to share this recent new business location...

The Comic Book Store, a small chain of 2 Spokane area comic stores has opened in it's new Northtown Mall location. The new store is larger then the previous store and is now located on the mall's second floor behind Maurice's and just down from Macy's . The new Northtown Mall Comic Book Store offers comic books both new and used but also many other items. The shelves are stocked with board games, t-shirts ,memorbilia from famous movies and games. As well as japanese sodas, drinks ,snacks and candies.

The new location also gives Spokane area gamers more room to have games and tournments for such games as Magic,etc...

The Comic Book Store also continues to operate a second Spokane location in a strip mall at 3207 N. Division St at the base of the Division St. hill. The new location in Northtown opened in Mid-November.

Joann Fabrics opening this month in Coeur d' Alene

Update 03/05/13- Joann Fabrics did not open by Feb. 15th as is stated below, the opening date is now Friday March 8th.

Follow up to previous info posted on this site, read the first post on the new Joann Fabrics store at Coeur d Alene's Silver Lake Mall visit-
http://www.inlandnwbusiness.com/2012/10/joann-fabrics-to-open-new-store-in.html

Joann Fabrics is opening a new store at Silver Lake Mall in Coeur d' Alene. The store is actually a store relocation for the popular national fabric and craft chain that has had a location in Coeur d' Alene for sometime but will close that location after the new store opens. The former Joann location has been on 4th St. directly next door to Safeway in Midtown Coeur d' Alene.

The new store is part of a larger redo of the Rouse Properties owned mall. The new store will occupy the northwest corridor of the mall, the store will be in a remodeled space that was formerly several stores including RadioShack and Huckleberry Thicket. The stores displaced by Joann have all eather moved elsewhere in the mall or in RadioShack case closed altogther.

The Silver Lake Mall JoAnn Fabric store is larger then the old store. The walls blocking view of the store have all come down as of this post and the official opening is now expected for Feb. 15th .

Elsewhere at Silver Lake crews are working on a new Sports Authority store (a post about that new store can be found here- http://www.inlandnwbusiness.com/2012/10/sports-authority-to-open-in-coeur-d.html ) also Pac Sun has closed and a new gift and accessory store is also opening.

Bruchi's leaves Spokane area malls, replaced by Subway

Big things are happening in the Spokane mall food courts and the more noticable is the new lack of Bruchi's . Bruchi's Cheesesteak and Subs is a Spokane based fast service resturant chain that operate several locations but recently both their Northtown Mall and Spokane Valley Mall locations have closed.

The rumor (and it is only a rumor, I have not yet confirmed this...) is that the mall owner's General Growth Properties has increased the rent on the units. This however is only speculation.

But Spokanites looking for quick meal while they do their shopping at the mall won't have any problem feeding their hunger as both locations are / have been replaced by Subway Resturants .Subway has already opened in the former Bruchi's spot next to Cinabon in the Spokane Valley Mall food court and will open soon in the Northtown Mall food court inbetween Panda Express(which is also a newer resturant for the mall) and Claire's.

Bruchi's as a company is far from closed however ,the chain will soon open a new location of their own on 29th St on the South Hill.

Elsewhere in the food courts a new asian option is opening on the other end of the Northtown Mall food court, that resturant is called Miso . Miso will be located next to Arby's in the former Edo Japan space.
