Coeur d Alene Union Gospel Mission site coming

If you've driven thru the neighborhoods nearby the US 95 and Appleway intersection in Coeur d' Alene over the last few months one large construction site has surely caught your attention. The site which from a distance may be confused for a new hotel or maybe even a new apartment complex is in fact of the biggest projects in Coeur d' Alene right now,And surely the city's largest non-profit expansion.

The all new building located on Haycraft Ave. is being built as a branch of the homeless and needy non profit organization , Union Gospel Mission , who up until now has primarily focused on the needs of the less fortunate in the Spokane area is opening a new mission on this CdA site for women and children. The Coeur d' Alene Union Gospel Mission is set to open Aug 1st and will be under the direction of Joann Zajicek.

The new Coeur d' Alene Union Gospel Mission branch will feature a convenient location which is near a CityLink bus line as well as many programs to help get Coeur d' Alene's homeless women and children back on their feet. Inside the new building one will find 35 shelter beds, 30 crisis center beds as well as an on site doctor, dental and vision clinics on site, kitchen space , several classrooms, computer labs, admin. offices and a chapel. The floor plan also shows a "recovery store" which could be a Coeur d' Alene location of the popular Union Gospel Mission Thrift Store .

The new Coeur d' Alene Union Gospel Mission is fulfilling a great need in the community and is also always taking donations and new volunteers to staff their centers. For more info visit the mission's website at-

Major road constuction projects underway in North Idaho

This spring and summer will be no different then years past for Coeur d' Alene as the orange barrels and road closed signs have already gone up at a few locations in the Coeur d' Alene area. A few of the major construction spots this year are...

1. Beck Rd. / I-90 Interchange in Post Falls

Once construction is complete later this year Beck Rd will be rebuild and a round about will connect Beck Rd. with Riversbend Ave which will also provide a new  entry to the mostly dead North Idaho Outlet Mall.

During construction some work and re-configuration will also take place on the busy Northwest Blvd. also a railroad track that ran thru the project has already been removed as the rail line has been abandoned for some time.

3. Government Way re-construction from Dalton Ave. north several blocks.

Roosevelt Inn Coeur d' Alene - Local INBW business profile

In this Inland Northwest Business Watch local business profile we take a look at a local Coeur d' Alene bed and breakfast style hotel that we can expect to be hearing a lot about over the next few weeks as the hotel, The Roosevelt Inn was recently a filming location for the new Gordon Ramsey TV show Hotel Hell which begins airing on FOX in June. The Hotel Hell TV show is similar to prior shows by Gordon Ramsay where he takes a struggling business and fixes any issues the business has and therefor saves the day.  The new TV series will premiere on June 4th at 8pm on all FOX Stations including are own FOX 28. The episode featuring Coeur d' Alene's Roosevelt Hotel is a little harder to pin down it's air date but from what I know it will be one of the first to air.I will update this post and put it on the Inland Northwest Business Watch Facebook page (www.facebook.com/inlandnorthwestbusinesswatch ) when I find out the air date.

But now a closer look at The Roosevelt Inn , The locally owned and operated hotel is located only a few blocks north of Downtown Coeur d' Alene and the Lake at 105 E. Wallace Ave. The Roosevelt is located inside a historic school house which is the oldest remaining school house in Coeur d' Alene and is also on the National Register of Historic Places. The hotel offers 15 guest rooms and is also a popular location for weddings in Coeur d' Alene, a city which has been called the Wedding Capital of the Northwest for it's scenic location and ease of obtaining a marriage licence . The Roosevelt Inn offers several wedding packages ranging from 890 dollars up to 7000 plus dollar package for 150 plus guests.

Another interesting point of the hotel is it's owners , The hotel is owned and operated by Coeur d' Alene residents Tina and John Hough , who just happen to be the aunt and uncle of Julianne Hough and Derek Hough of ABC'S Dancing With the Stars fame. And last of all Guest Room rates are reasonable also however they can very depending on the season and events in the local area but for June would range around 169.00 to 329.00 , please check their website for more info and room availability.

For more info on The Roosevelt Inn visit them online at www.therooseveltinn.com

Just a few quick follow-ups:
The Spokane Chipotle Mexican Grill that I mentioned earlier on this blog was opening in Spokane is getting closer to their opening date.I now know they will open sometime in June and will be in the former Hollywood Video location at 922 N Division near both Downtown Spokane and Gonzaga University. This will be the first Spokane area location for Chipotle Mexican Grill and judging by the internet buzz it's collecting(The original story about their opening in Spokane is now INBW's most viewed business news item) it should be highly successful in our area.

Their food truck however is now for sale, for info on buying the business search for Mommy G's Gourmet Grilled Cheese on Facebook.

And the good news of the night:
Summer is finally arriving in the Spokane area. And one way to note that is this weekend is the new season opening for Manito Park's Park Bench Cafe. The Park Bench Cafe returns to it's home in the popular South Hill park with espresso and smoothies as well as food items like sandwiches ,wraps and soups.

The Milk Bottle has re-opened !

After several months of massive remodeling Spokane's landmark Mary Lou's Milk Bottle Restaurant officially re-opened to the public this Mother's Day Weekend . The Milk Bottle which is located at 802 W. Garland Ave in the middle of The Garland District in Spokane . The Milk Bottle has become a landmark for the community due in part to it's creative Milk Bottle design and it's age as the building has been a part of the Garland District for decades. The Milk Bottle was also a filming location in the Johnny Deep film Benny & Joon with the exterior of the building being used frequently in the movie.

The closure and complete rebuild was required after a large fire burned The Milk Bottle and the neighboring restaurant , Ferguson's Cafe in Sept of 2011. The new Milk Bottle touts basically the same look as it did before the fire with the small exceptions of higher ceilings and decorative lighting made out of old milk bottles. The menu for The Milk Bottle is also the same, serving up classic diner food and milk shakes.

The other Spokane landmark business hit hard by the fire was Ferguson's Cafe directly next door to The Milk Bottle. That small diner sustained more damage in the fire but is also re-built,more on that in a later post.

For more info visit The Milk Bottle on their Facebook page at - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Milk-Bottle/217156621681111

Citylink to make cuts

In today's local economy Budget Cuts are far from uncommon, especially when it comes to cuts from a government agency. But the cuts enacted to Coeur d' Alene's Citylink Bus Service will effect how many in the community get around as many low income Coeur d' Alene area residents rely on Citylink as their only source of transportation. Citylink is funded from several local government agencies with the staffing and maintenance  for the bus system being provided by the Coeur d' Alene Tribe of Indians  . Citylink operates routes in Coeur d' Alene, Hayden ,Post Falls, Worley, Plummer and some other more rural areas of Kootenai County just as they have since the services launch back in 2005. The new cuts are based on the fact that the Tribe can simply not afford to continue payment on the service under the current business model that Citylink uses. The Cuts will directly affect the service and the new routes and times go into effect on May 14th, among the new changes to Citylink are....

-Routes now end at the Riverstone Park and Ride facility in Coeur d Alene at 10pm instead of 1am as before
-The red bus route thru Post Falls by way of Cabela's will be eliminated but to make up for this the blue route bus will be re-routed along Mullan Ave. thru Post Falls and will also now include stops on Spokane St. , Poleline Ave and Idaho St. all of which are in Post Falls. This change however eliminates city bus service to the west end of Post Falls.
-Routes will now return to the Riverstone facility every hour on the hour,as opposed to the every 80 min schedule which had been in place.
-More bus stops will be added to allow shorter walking distances to the nearest Citylink bus stop.
- The Green Route will no longer terminate at the Hayden Super 1 Shopping Center but will instead end farther south on Commerce Way off of Honeysuckle Ave behind the Hayden Post Office.
-The Coverage area for Citylink's Para-transit service will also shrink.

Northern Quest Casino improvements

Since the Kalispel Tribe of Indians opened their Northern Quest Casino on Hayford Rd. in the Spokane suburb of Airway Heights they have never stopped looking for ways to improve the Casino and the surrounding property for the 1000's of people who visit it every year. And now is no different as the tribe is making more changes at Northern Quest, The first change will open in June as some of the space currently occupied by a gift shop called The Logo Shop will become a new yogurt shop, work on the new shop will begin soon, I'll post the name and opening once I have it. The Logo Shop space is near the Sprague Ave. enterance to the resort and directly across the hall from a bar called Liquid .

Also happening soon, the casino is planning a remodel of it's River's Edge Buffet . The buffet is located near the Pond Orelle Pavilion Event Center and next to the Woodland Resturant . During the remodel the buffet will for a time move into the Pavillion ,construction on the buffet which will remain in the same space it's in today will begin soon also.

And one of the more visible improvements to the Northern Quest Casino will be outside where the Kalispel Tribe will realign Sprague Ave. as it crosses the tribe's property this summer. The new Sprague Ave. will be bided out in June and will be rebuilt to allow for future development . The new Sprague Ave will be a  4 lane blvd. with a median . The new alignment will move Sprague south to where the Tribe's Chevron gas station sits on Hayford Rd. and will also include a new entry drive to the Casino. Also planned is a new drive for future Industrial development off of Sprague inbetween Northern Quest and the Airway Heights Correctional Facility. It is unclear at this time what plans the tribe has for this land which is nicknamed Legacy Landing but has indicated it may one day become a mixed use commercial development which may also include a selection of big box retailers.

On top of all the new things on the horizon at Northern Quest Casino they are also about to begin another year of the highly successful Northern Quest Casino Pepsi Summer Concert Series which takes place entirely outside by the Casino's Hotel Tower.I know i've shared the concert schedule before but I figured I'd re-post it since I know at least 1 concert has been added since my last post. A note from the "Management"

As regular Inland Northwest Business Watch readers may have noticed the posts on this site are no longer being posted daily . I had been trying to run this as a daily source for all business news and info on new businesses in the Spokane and Coeur d' Alene area. But as I am happy to report the local economy is starting to turn around and I as one person with other obligations simply cannot post everything. Inland Northwest Business Watch is still going strong and I hope to return to posting very soon but there may be longer gaps in posts then there had been in the past.

The main reason for writing this post is to invite the community to share their news,Inland Northwest Business Watch's goal is to be the go to web site for all local business news and info in the Spokane / CdA area . To do this i'm inviting anyone who wants it the opportunity to become a contributor to the site. I cannot pay for stories but will take anything you know of and want to write about, even if it is about you own business. I also cannot guarantee posting but I will take to time to read all business news submissions and will do my best. You can send your business stories,etc... to me at inlandbusiness@yahoo.com being a contributor to Inland Northwest Business Watch may also be a great way to build a writing portfolio,so write (or type) away.

Also remember there are many other ways to interact with Inland Northwest Business Watch....
