Philly Express to open new location near Downtown Coeur d' Alene

After sitting vacant for several months it looks like a new restaurant is opening soon in the former Subway space at 1500 Northwest Blvd. in Coeur d' Alene. Subway as you may recall moved this location to a new building on Sherman in Downtown CdA.

The restaurant, planned for the high traffic location is Philly Express. They are a locally owned and operated business that's already known for serving up some delicious and big Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches from a space inside the Silver Lake Mall. Philly Express plans this new location to be a second location with the restaurant in the mall also staying open. Hiring for the new place is underway, it will have both dine in and carry out in a about 1800 square foot space.

The Northwest Blvd Philly Express will open around May and will likely have the same menu and fast casual styling as their original store. While known for their Philly Cheesesteaks customers can also find salads, burgers, hot dogs, sausages and more. A look at their menu, and more information can be found on their website at-

New Maverick locations popping up all over Spokane, 3 under construction, 2 planned

The Utah based Maverick chain of gas stations / convenience stores is clearly finding success in the Spokane market as they continue to aggressively add new local locations. On top of the 3 that are currently in various phases of construction, and the 3 that already open for business, we're learning of 2 more stores in the immediate pipeline for Spokane. Those new locations are planned for-

( Northwest corner of Sullivan & Marietta, near the Spokane Business & Industrial Park )

Southwest corner of Francis & Market , Spokane
( Currently only in the "pre-development conference" stage, but likely to open )

The new Maverick on Market is of interest because the lot it will be built on is occupied by a couple of run down buildings that will be removed for the new business. That location's construction planning documents include a rendering of their proposed signage that includes the Cinnabon name and logo implying it will open with a Cinnabon location inside of it.

There new planned Maverick's will join a list of 3 other new locations currently further along at-

1019 E. Francis Ave. , NE corner of Francis & Nevada in North Spokane
4337 S. Regal Ave , NE corner of S. Regal & E. 44th on the South Hill

2415 N. Argonne Rd , NW corner of N. Argonne & E. Montgomery in Spokane Valley

The location at 1019 E. Francis is the one we've been getting a lot of e-mails about because it is going into the site where Spokane Boys had sat for many years. Spokane Boys is shifting their operations to another part of their lot and not going out of business.

Maverik is known for being a clean lower priced gas station chain with a Bonfire brand of hot foods prepared on site and some other features not found in other gas stations. Their locations are mostly uniform with 5000 or so square feet and many fuel islands. For more information about Maverik visit their website at-

Update- New apartment building rising at Sprague & Madelia

Community Frameworks latest apartment building construction project is now well underway in a neighborhood of Spokane that has been in need of revitalization.

A long E. Sprague at the corner of Sprague & Madelia where a used car lot had operated is now the frame of a 3 story building to be occupied by affordably priced apartments. The building will have 36 rental units and should be ready for occupancy around October of this year.

A second phase of this project is to include a handful of townhomes behind the main building. This portion of the project is on a slightly different schedule and will be done closer to the end of the year. The project will be call 1 South Madelia , a reflection of the building's address and the second major apartment project recently for Community Frameworks who recently completed 315 West, north of Downtown. This project also joins the Sprague Union Terrace building in providing new housing and community spaces for the neighborhood.

Community Frameworks doesn't mention this project as of yet on their website, but they will. And for more information on their many programs / already open apartment developments, visit-

Renovations coming for The Otis Hotel?

Not much is known as of today about what the future holds for the vacant Otis Hotel building at 110 S. Madison St in Downtown Spokane. But if the documents I've un-covered are any indication we might be seeing a re-birth of the building that today is more famous for being used in the TV show Z Nation then any sort of permanent occupancy.

But just a few days ago a " pre-development conference " application was filed for the Otis showing a renovation plan for the building. Under that plan construction would start in about July of this year to create a new mixed use development. Newly renovated commercial space would occupy the first floor and apartments on floors 2-5.

The plan calls for just over 100 apartments, all studio and one bedroom units, likely using the micro-apartment style as the floor plans show the smallest apartments being in the 250 square foot range.

The Otis has been vacant since 2007 and was last used low income housing but was originally opened as a hotel in 1911 with a restaurant on the bottom floor. That bottom floor space will return to commercial use under the re-development plan but there is no mention of what kind of business would be there.

Keep watching this site as we expect a more formal announcement about this building in the next couple of months.
