Coeur d' Alene Carousel finds it's new home

A highlight to a trip to Spokane is usually a visit to the landmark carousel at Riverfront Park Downtown but did you know Coeur d' Alene once had a carousel of it's own? That carousel was a favorite of many who once visited the Playland Pier a now long gone theme park that was built on a pier jetting out into Lake Coeur d' Alene in between City Park and Downtown Coeur d' Alene. The carousel was a fixture at the pier from the early 1940's thru the 1970's leaving many who grew up around Coeur d' Alene fond memories.

The carousel left Coeur d' Alene for a few decades until 2011 when John and Pat Foote paid 200,000 to purchase back the carousel and it now sits in storage somewhere in Coeur d' Alene.

But now the foundation working along side of  the local urban renewal agency the Lake City Development Corporation ( LCDC ) have found it a home and one that will sure add to somewhat struggling area,Riverstone. LCDC and the Coeur d' Alene Carousel Foundation plan to build a new building near the lake in the Riverstone Park. It's unclear as to when the carousel will be open again to the public and what,if anything might also be built at the carousel building's site but we should know more in near future.

New baseball stadium proposed for Coeur d' Alene

One of the largest development projects on the horizon for Coeur d' Alene might just come to fruition soon and be open for the Summer of 2014. That project is a new baseball stadium that is in the works off of 15th St. near Cherry Hill Park and I-90. Many ,including officials with the City of Coeur d' Alene are seeking the construction of a new larger stadium due to the loss of the American Legion baseball fields at McEwen Park due that Downtown park being planned to undergo a complete re-build itself in the coming months.

The American Legion's baseball team,The Coeur d' Alene Lumbermen is already ironing out a plan with the city to relocate their games to fields off of Ramsey Rd near The Kroc Center. But the new stadium will not go empty as a West Coast League Baseball team called the Riverhawks has expressed interest in moving to Coeur d' Alene and using the new stadium as their home field. The Riverhawks which have been on hiatus for the last couple of seasons used to play in Spokane as the Spokane Riverhawks and had mentioned a move to Coeur d' Alene back in 2009, however in 2009 Coeur d' Alene still lacked proper facilities to support a local baseball team.

The new Baseball stadium is being spearheaded by a newly formed local non-profit origination with baseball legend and Hayden resident, Don Larsen acting as honorary chair of the group. The new stadium would be much larger then the fields seen today at McEwen Park. In fact the new stadium would be potentially large enough for other uses such as concerts and tradeshows. The outfield could even be used for soccer or field hockey should the need arise.

The proposed news stadium would include 2 new surface parking lots connected by a round-a-bout and will cost around 3 million to build. Seating at new ballpark is unclear at this time but would surely be a size-ably higher amount over the current seating arrangement at McEwen in Downtown Coeur d' Alene.

For more info on the new Stadium or how to donate to help with construction costs,etc... visit-

Sandpoint's new Sand Creek Byway now open

After a few years of on going road construction and dealing with some opposition from local residents, a new vital link around the North Idaho City of Sandpoint is now complete and open to traffic. The new road is a 2+ mile long bypass of Sandpoint for travelers on Us Hwy 95 and will one day link into the Idaho Transportation Department's plans to create a 4 lane highway for US 95 from Coeur d' Alene north all the way to the border with Canada,Another section of that new freeway is under construction now from Hayden to Athol in the Silverwood Theme Park area.

The new Sandpoint bypass is called the Sand Creek Byway because it parallel's Sand Creek and Lake Pond Orelle to the east of Downtown Sandpoint and then re-joins the original highway north of Sandpoint just south of Bonner Mall in the small town of Ponderay. The Sand Creek Byway also includes a bicycle / hiking trail to the west of the main roadway which should open on a close date to the Byway opening. The Sand Creek Byway has been on the state's largest road projects and has been an item of discussion for decades to reduce the truck traffic,etc... from Sandpoint's downtown streets.
