Santa Express open in Downtown Spokane

Sure Santa Express isn't in it's first year being open. However it's what this seasonal retail store does for kids and the community that makes it's annual opening so beneficial. Santa Express gives kids the chance to shop for their parents and other loved one's, on their own, teaching them shopping skills and those all important budgeting skills.

At Santa Express children are matched with a store volunteer and then taken behind a curtain to where they can shop, purchase and even wrap up the gifts to give to their loved ones on the holiday. Santa Express also features a small selection outside of the curtained off area so adults can shop some too.

And to top it all of, Santa Express is a non profit store. The store each year helps to fund the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery . In fact last year's store sale provided over 60,000 dollars to assist the shelter.

Santa Express is located on the 2nd floor of the Cresent Court Building at 707 W. Main St in Downtown Spokane (inbetween River Park Square and the STA Bus Plaza).

Fire closes 2 new local businesses

Sadly 2 new businesses in Spokane Valley are now closed, at least for the time being after a fire ripped thru their building at 17927 E. Appleway Ave. in the Green Acres area of Spokane Valley.

The 2 businesses affected our The Handle Bar and Hell Yeah Cycles. The businesses had only been open for a little under 2 months and had some delays in opening as well. The owner is said to have insurance but it is not known if the building will be re-built or the businesses re-opened. I will update as soon as I hear anything on these business re-opening.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Missoula,Montana based mattress retailer, Sleep City has closed it's stores in the Spokane and Coeur d' Alene area. The closure happened sometime in the last few weeks and came as a surprise to some.

The closure also included a store at the intersection of Division and Empire in Spokane that had only been open a couple of months.

While the Spokane area Sleep City stores are gone, a new mattress retailer is coming to town, more on that in another new post,tomorrow...

A new home for Coeur d' Alene Schools

The Coeur d' Alene School District #274 has found a new home for it's administrative offices. The district will likely move sometime in February of 2013 to there newly leased building located at 1400 Northwood Center Court, nearby the Northwest Blvd. / Seltice Way intersection in Coeur d' Alene.

The move was viewed as a necessity because the district's current offices ,located on 10th St. , close to Downtown Coeur d' Alene, are severly outdated and are quickly becoming un-usable. The old offices will be torn down sometime next spring after the district moves out.

The new building is also more conveinent to the district's schools which are scattered thru out the city.A plan was once also considered for building a new office by the district's Midtown Center campus but that plan was quickly scrapped after preliminary estmates came back over budget.

The building on Northwood Center Court will come with a cost of 21,000 a month for 9 months and at the end of the 9 months the district will have the option to purchase the building for 2.2 million dollars. Payment on the purchase of the new building will be made by selling off excess property elsewhere in the city, including a property the district is too sell to the city. That property is part of Person Field, another property up for sale is along Atlas Rd. by Northshire Park.

Benewah Medical Center is now open in Plummer

The small town of Plummer, located along US 95 on the Coeur d' Alene Indian Reservation, is a good drive from medical assistance like a major hospital. Even Coeur d' Alene is a 45 min drive to the north. The local Benewah Medical Center is the town's only medical facility but it's small facilities have lacked adequate space for the region's needs.

But all that has thankfully has changed with the opening a couple of weeks ago of the all new Benewah Medical Center building on the north end of town. The new building is about 50,000 square feet and took about 17 million dollars to construct. Building design work was done by NAC Architecture.

The medical center provides everything from basic check-up's to urgent care and even specialty care. Counselling, physical therapy and pharmacy services are also available on site. And for added healing ,the medical center is directly affiliated with the local wellness center. The wellness center provides a pool and other fitness programs to Plummer area residents, both Native American and non for a membership fee.

Spokane International Airport upgrades

Although mostly minor upgrades this time around, The Spokane International Airport has put a lot of time and money into a few upgrades recently. All of which are geared towards improving the experience for passengers and customers coming in and out of GEG.

The new project at Spokane International include...

-A new cell phone parking lot
This new bigger cell phone parking lot is in a new location this time closer to the terminal. The new lot is located directly on Airport Dr. on the opposite side from the main parking lot and parking garage entry. The new cell phone parking lot is a lot where visitor may park and wait to pick up passengers who in turn call by cell phone. The old lot was along Flint Rd. still on the Airport campus but a longer trip.

-A new mobile website.
Now when users log into the Airport's website at www.spokaneairports.net using a iPhone, Android or Blackberry type mobile device they are connected into a new mobile version of the main web site. The new site allows users to navigate thru the Airport on the phone and get up to date flight arrival and departure times. The user can even share their flight info on Facebook and Twitter directly from the new mobile website.

-A new SRE building
SRE stands for Snow Removal Equipment and now this winter Spokane International is even more ready for the new snow and ice with a new storage building to house the Airport's SRE equipment. The new building is expected to be complete sometime early next year.

- Newly resurfaced parking garage helixes
The helix's are the spiral exit ramps on the side of the parking garage across from the Terminal. During the month of October those ramps we're completely resurfaced and will now have increased traction for car tires during the upcoming winter months.

Spokane International Airport also will launch service to Hawaii in early 2013 ( info on that here-  http://inlandbusiness.blogspot.com/2012/08/allegiant-air-lands-in-spokane.html  ). And the Airport is also continuing to work on establishing flight service between Spokane and LAX. More on that flight connection hopefully soon.

Central Food joins the Downtown Spokane dining scene

It's official, Downtown Spokane's newest restaurant is also one of the first commercial tenants for the Kendall Yards Development, along the north bank of the Spokane River. Central Food which is located at 1335 W. Summit Pkwy and is owned by popular local chef , David Blane.

But just what kind of food does Central Food offer? According to Chef David on the restaurant's Facebook page,Central Food has no theme,no ethnicity, no genre, just food. But one thing is for sure the new restaurant will serve local and regional foods, something that has become very popular in the national culinary scene in recent years.

Central Food also offers an outdoor dining patio overlooking the Spokane River and Downtown Spokane. The location will also make the restaurant a hub for the Kendall Yards residents ,who should increase greatly in the coming months.

Small Business Saturday is Nov. 24th!

Everyone has heard of Black Friday,in fact some of you may already have a plan for what stores you'll hit up for this year's day after Thanksgiving sales. Those sales do offer good deals but at the end of the day when all the money is broken up a majority is going to another part of the country or nation and won't help locally.

But one big holiday shopping day does... Small Business Saturday . Small Business Saturday is a annual event formed originally by American Express. Small Business Saturday began in 2010 and just last year American Express reported over 100 million shoppers taking advantage of the deals at local small businesses in their area.

This year's Small Business Saturday falls on Nov. 24th ,perfectly sandwiched in between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. While the event is national many Spokane and Coeur d' Alene area retailers are sure to have special offers, in fact a map showing where to shop will be posted soon on the Small Business Satuday official site at...
https://www.americanexpress.com/us/small-business/Shop-Small/

But why shop local? Here are 10 great reasons...

The Inland Northwest Business Watch team (me,myself and I ) strongly support the shop local movement and Small Business Saturday. That's why I want to help your small business get more customers for this year's event....

If you are a small business owner in the Spokane and Coeur d' Alene area and plan to have any sort of special or event for this year's Small Business Saturday,Tell us! simply ether comment about it below,e-mail it to inlandbusiness@yahoo.com or use the contact us page and we will share it in a upcoming post both on this page and on out Facebook page. And it's all free!!!

Total Wine & More now open in Spokane

It looks like the new Washington State liquor privatization laws may be pushing some residents to escape the higher state liquor taxes and heading for Idaho to make their purchases. But the results of the new liquor options in the state may not be all bad and that's because of Total Wine & More .

Total Wine & More is a new store that opened just a couple of weeks ago in the Northpointe Shopping Center on Newport Hwy (US Route 2) just about a block north of the Y in North Spokane. Total Wine is a chain of stores that describe themselves as wine superstores,in fact the new Spokane store is big enough to fill all of the space left behind by the closure of the Northpointe Borders Bookstore.

Total Wine & More is based in Maryland and now boasts over 80 locations nationally and still growing. In Washington Total Wine & More stores can be found in Spokane, Bellevue and Tukwila.

The new Spokane store features,of course, wine. But the store's wine selection is in the 1,000's with wines ranging from everyday to hard to find international selections. And wine isn't the only business as the middle of the store features liquors with selection also in the 1,000's.

Spokane's beer lovers will also love Total Wine & More with a store department called the Brewery District on the south side of the building. The beer selection is larger then any other selection in Spokane and the department also offers growler refills and a bar.

Visitors will also enjoy the in store tastings and even a walk in humidor for cigar purchases. At this point in time the North Spokane store is the only store of this chain in the Spokane market but rumors have been swirling for a while on this one. Also a similar chain called BevMo is said to be looking at Spokane has a potential future store location.

Here is a photo of the front of the new Spokane Total Wine & More store, located at 9980 N. Newport Hwy.

State Line Liquor Store is open

For the first time in over 3 years the State of Idaho has opened a new liquor store. The new store is located almost directly on the Washington/ Idaho state line near Post Falls , in the tiny town of State Line.

The store which is located directly next door to Lew's Smoke Shop at the corner of Seltice Way and Wellesley Ave. has been open for only a couple of weeks now and was a direct reaction by Idaho to Washington State's Liquor Privatization laws which we're passed by voters and put into place in June of 2012. The new laws allow stores such as Wal-Mart and Costco to liquor but with higher prices and taxes then Idaho.

The new laws have clearly inspired more then a few Washington residents to make a run for the border for their liquor needs. In fact the existing Post Falls Liquor Store by Domino's Pizza near the corner of Seltice Way and Spokane St. has reported huge jumps in sales making it one of the busiest liquor stores in the State of Idaho.

Even with the new store the current Post Falls Liquor Store and another Liquor Store in Post Falls located at Hwy. 41 and Seltice also plan to stay open. Area Idaho Liquor Stores are also located in Coeur d' Alene and Hayden.

Sprague Union Terrace coming to Spokane

Spokane's East Central neighborhood, particularly the neighborhood around East Sprague Avenue has long been known for its crime issues including drugs, prostitution and other unwelcome happenings. But the times are changing for the East Sprague area as in the last couple of years the neighborhood has been renamed the Spokane International District for the amount of shops and restaurants that feature items and foods from other parts of the world.

And now there's even more hope for the newly formed Spokane International District with the construction of a large new apartment and multi-purpose building to be called Sprague Union Terrace which will be located on the site of a former farmer's market directly along E. Sprague.

The new building which is under construction already is scheduled to be complete sometime around March of 2013. The street level of the building will feature new retail shop space and the upper 3 stories of the building will consist of subsidized apartments.

The buildings look and the higher amount of new residences will hopefully continue to deter crime and bring back the neighborhood.

Zipcar comes to Spokane

A new way to get around has come to Spokane and that new way is thru a service called car sharing. And no this car sharing isn't what you and your teen driver do on Saturday night, this time it's thru a national car sharing service called, Zipcar .

Zipcar , which is a Massachusetts based company has entered into an agreement with Gonzaga University to park a few of Zipcar's cars on their campus for use by students and anyone in the community who is a member of the service. Zipcar's cars have become a  popular transportation option for many other cities in the nation including Pullman where Zipcar's cars can be found on Washington State University's campus.

Locally the Zipcar cars will be found at 1200 N Standard Ave. near DeSmet Cir. at Gonzaga. Renting a car is easy but does require an annual fee to become a member of the service and a rental fee to borrow the cars after that. The fee annually is 60 dollars for a community member and 25 dollars for Gonzaga student or faculty member. After that the cars are 69 dollars a day or 7.50 per hour.

Another perk of the new car sharing service will be a reduced environmental impact as one of the goal of car-sharing is the reduce the amount of cars on the roads.Nationally Zipcar has over 11,000 cars in service.
