Exotic Metals Forming looks to be planning a big plant expansion in Airway Heights

Just 4 years ago, Exotic Metals Forming announced that they would build a new factory nearby Spokane International Airport in Airway Heights. Now the Kent based aerospace company is open and operational in that 150,000 square foot plant located at 12821 W. McFarlane Rd.

But, it looks like Exotic Metals Forming isn't done investing in the Spokane region. This as the company has filed a SEPA application for a very large expansion, built out over the next couple of years. If all is approved and goes as planned the company plans to build 2 more 150,000 square foot buildings directly the west of their existing facility.

Construction of the 1st building is hoped to begin early next year, and the 2nd building would follow that, possibly in 2020 although construction dates for that phase aren't set yet. A new 300 space parking lot would also be added, also built in phases. And, each new phase would add about 150 new jobs.

Exotic Metals Forming specializes in the design and fabrication of sheet metal assemblies and components for commercial and military aircraft applications. The already employ an estimated 150 in Airway Heights and per their website appear to be presently hiring.

Large 204 unit apartment complex planned on the West Plains

Recently both the Spokesman Review and the Cheney Free Press ran articles on the upcoming housing shortage on the West Plains. Amazon and possibly several other companies are coming, especially in the Airway Heights area. With that news I'd say it's safe to say we'll be seeing even more residential construction in this area, likely focusing largely on multi-family.

One such new project is now in the SEPA application phase, a new large apartment community tenitivly called Beau West. This new apartment complex would sprawl over 9.23 acres and would offer 204 apartments and 15 buildings. It is being developed by the Liberty Lake based Rudeen Develoment at 7410 Hayford Rd., at the corner of Hayford and Westbow.

The parties involved hope to start construction early next year. Since this project is still in the planning / permitting phase there isn't anything to report on a completion date or rental rates. In addition to the apartment buildings the site would include a clubhouse, picnic shelter, garages and a pool. The Beau West apartment project is actually just one of a few apartment complexes in various phases of development coming to the West Plains soon. More on each of those as we get it...

Spokane’s last Kmart to close, convert into a U-HAUL facility

It’s no secret that both K-Mart and Sears have struggled in recent years. But until now Kmart has maintained a presence in Spokane. While not officially coming from Kmart themselves many reports are now indicating that the last Spokane Kmart at 4110 E Sprague has been sold and will be closing.

The Phoenix Business Journal, among others, has reported that Arizona based U-Haul has purchased 13 total Kmart stores for $65 million, including the store here locally. U-Haul plans to convert the store buildings into self storage complexes with offices to rent / return U-Haul trucks.

No timeline is indicated about when the Kmart will close or when construction might begin. To review the article on the sale to U-Haul check https://www.bizjournals.com/phoenix/news/2018/12/03/u-haul-shells-out-millions-for-shuttered-kmarts.html

While Kmart is departing the Spokane market, Sears remains in business at Northtown Mall and Spokane Valley Mall.

UPDATE 12/28/18- Sadly Kmart has confirmed this store will be closing. As will a Sears store in Kennewick. Check out this video to see the current condition of the store since if your like me you haven’t been inside in some time ( video was made by a local YouTuber and not myself )

One of Spokane's Shopko department store locations is going out of business. Listed as one of 39 total Shopko's to close nationwide, the store at 4515 S. Regal will officially close their doors in February.

Liquidation sales will begin today ( Dec. 7th ) and run through the holiday season. The South Hill store is the only store in Spokane and all of Washington state set to close. Shopko intends to continue operating their North Spokane, Spokane Valley and Coeur d' Alene stores.

The Habit Burger files for a building permit on N. Division

A growing and very popular California based burger chain looks to be coming to Spokane. No, it's not In & Out but I think Spokane will surely get in the The Habit of going to The Habit Burger Grill.

Building permits we're recently filed to construct a new building for The Habit Burger Grill at 6710 N. Division. This is the vacant lot at Division & Lyons where a Popeye's Chicken had been planned to be built. Little is known as of my writing this about the planned new Spokane location but this is a building permit and not just a "pre-development meeting" with a set expiration date of late May 2019. Given this we'll likely see them opening sometime around the Spring of 2019.

The Habit Burger Grill is an Irvine,Ca based chain with about 250 locations in 10 US States and a couple of overseas locations in China and the UAE. They are considered one of the fastest growing fast food chains in the United States with a menu of burgers, chicken and more. A menu can be found on their website which is the link below...

Union Tavern now open on E. Sprague

Life has returned to the abandoned "palmistry building" on E. Sprague. After several months of construction Union Tavern is now open in the building which is located at 1914 E. Sprague.

While it's a new business, Union Tavern's décor plays homage to the history of the building and the area. Historic beer advertisements are scatted through out, old wooden bleacher seats from the Gonzaga Kennel and a bar salvaged out of now closed Casino in Montana. And, even those old palmistry signs are still displayed in the business.

Union Tavern features beer, wine and liquor and even a food menu. Among the offerings are sandwiches, burgers, salads, soups, appetizers and more. A small breakfast menu is also available on the weekends. Union Tavern is basically geared towards being cool new local hang out for all ages.

4 Seasons Coffee Company moving larger facility in Spokane Valley

Founded in 1976, 4 Seasons Coffee Company was Spokane's first coffee roasting business. But, while many other coffee company's have came and went locally 4 Seasons is not only still in business but they are actually moving to a new larger facility.

Work has started to re-locate 4 Seasons from 10 S. Grant to 12410 E. Indiana in Spokane Valley. There they will share the building with Sounds on Wheels and should have the move complete by the end of the year. The new location is a 9000 square foot space which will enable 4 Seasons to nearly double their roasting capacity with a new, larger roaster. The location will also offer space for espresso training and tasting.

Today, Four Seasons Coffee Company is one of the leading coffee brands in Spokane selling their coffee at dozens of locations around the Inland Northwest. Not just Amazon coming to the Geiger Blvd corridor

Creating over 2000 jobs in a massive new warehouse, Spokane’s planned Amazon fulfillment center is the biggest project going up on the West Plains. But, it’s far from the only thing coming to that area.

Spokane County is applying for a grant to upgrade Geiger Blvd. and a couple other roadways in the area. The news about that grant can be found at http://www.khq.com/story/39252075/16-million-grant-requested-for-geiger-blvd-infrastructure-improvements

But, what’s news for this site is the sneak peek at other projects via a map included in the grant documents. I’ll include it below, but it shows Kenworth is planning a facility to employ 150, Shredfast also has a building in the works. And, many new homes and apartments are also in the works.

This won’t all happen overnight, and I know the LaQuinta Inn project has been in the works for approximately two years now so it’s impossible to predict any of these projects but it’s safe to say the West Plains is growing!

Three Ninjas to open brick & mortar restaurant in Kendall Yards

Three Ninjas Mobile Food has been a staple of local food truck events since their founding in 2014. And, now they're taking the next step into owning and operating an actual full time brick and mortar spot. Albeit a small spot...

Three Ninjas plans on opening soon at 1198 W. Summit Pkwy in the heart of Kendall Yards, this is the former Solace Mead and Cider storefront. While Kendall Yards is known for being home to several of Spokane's best restaurants, this will basically be the first quick service / take away dining option in the neighborhood.

Their space will be a little over 300 square feet with a very small dining area and the ability to pick up orders to go. If all goes as planned the new restaurant will open around Nov 1st and will serve a small menu that's similar to their current food truck menu of fusion tacos, wraps and more. They plan to continue the food truck side of the business as well.

Movie and Dinner to open Oct 5th - a sneak peek inside

Recently we we're able to get a private tour of one of the coolest new businesses coming to our area. That business is Movie and Dinner, which will be a dine in movie theater opening in a little more then a week in just steps away from Northern Quest Resort & Casino. The new business is a separate entity from Northern Quest but still part of the Tribe's campus. In fact, there even will be a covered walkway coming from Northern Quest to Movie and Dinner. And, Camas card holders will even be able to use their players club card benefits at the new theater.

Movie and Dinner is unique and not like the other dine in theater concepts seen from the big chain theater companies. They consider themselves a " restaurant with auditoriums " with a menu that allows for any budget. Guests can even enjoy lunch and dinner without seeing a movie.

The menu will also have something for every taste from Middle Eastern to more standard pub options and so much more. With their parent company being based in Kansas, they'll also have what promises to be some delicious Kansas City BBQ. Drink wise they will have Coke freestyle machines, beer, wine and spirts but they will be a family friendly establishment.

The business will have 8 auditoriums showing first run films, all opening Oct 5th. Movie and Dinner's auditoriums are smaller and more intimate with reserved seating in super comfortable recliners with huge screens. There really isn't a bad seat in the house, and they've really thought of everything! From exits away from the screen so no annoying exit light in the your view to no tipping which means no signature and no need for the awkward moment of the server bringing in a receipt at the best parts of the movie. This is the way movies are supposed to be seen!

Movie and Dinner will employ 50 and they officially opens Oct 5th, but watch for a grand opening event along with Cyber Quest / Kids Quest coming October 11-13th.

Tickets are on sale now! They can be purchased online at their website http://movieanddinner.com .

Currently opening weekend they will be showing A Star is Born , Venom and few more to be announced soon. Also if your planning an event soon take note because Movie and Dinner can even rent out their auditoriums for groups.

Movie and Dinner is located at 10893 W. Northern Quest Dr. , in addition to their website they can be contacted by phone at 509-381-0893. Thanks again to Movie and Dinner for the tour and we highly recommend checking them out soon!

New Pediatric office to open on the South Hill

The newest Pediatric office in the Lilac City, Spokane Pediatrics will begin scheduling appointments on Oct. 1st. The new clinic is led by Dr. Kimberly Grandinetti, M.D FAAP and Kimberly Resleff, ARNP who we're both raised here in Spokane.

Dr. Grandinetti M.D FAAP on the right, Resleff ARNP on the left

Their office they say will be an intentionally small practice, this way patients won't see a "revolving door of practitioners, but will instead build realtionships with a small staff dedicated to their health ". Wonder Building secures it's first office tenant

One of the more exciting projects happening locally, the former Wonder Bread factory's renovation will be complete soon. Once finished it will house about 100,000 square feet of office space and an artisan market space all operating under the new Wonder Building name and located nearby Downtown as well as the Spokane Arena at 821 W. Mallon.

When pre-leasing began a few months ago it was announced that JLL and NAI Black we're planning to market the building to both national and local companies in hope of filling the new spaces with exciting, growing companies. Now we're learning the first of these companies will be Parametrix, a Seattle based civil engineering firm.

Parametrix already has an office in Spokane at 106 W. Mission and they will relocate from that office to the new space. At the Wonder Building, Parametrix will occupy about 8,000 square feet with tenant improvement permits already filed with the City of Spokane. The company employs about 40 locally and they hope to be operating out of the new space by December.

STCU to open home loan center on Argonne next week

STCU is growing, and so is the local demand for home loans. Both being great news!!!

That's the reasoning behind the opening of STCU's first stand alone home loan center which opens on Wed. Aug 29th along Argonne Rd. in Spokane Valley. The new location is very convenient, just off of I-90 at the corner of Argonne & Mission ( 9207 E. Mission ) . The new Argonne Home Loan Center is housed in a 2595 square foot building that STCU has extensively remodeled into a cool new space, that looks drastically different from the dated 1970s look it once had.

The new facility will house a number of experienced loan officers to assist in all levels of the home loan process. And, while this branch will be limited to only doing transactions directly related to real estate lending inside, members can also use 2 new drive up ATM's outside . The ATM's are like any ATM at an STCU branch and are part of the co-op network, meaning they are surcharge free for anybody who uses a credit union that is a member of that network.

Home loan information and processing will still also be available at STCU's many neighborhood branches and their web site. This location is designed to give their members another convenient location for their needs. In addition to the Argonne site, STCU will open a home loan center in November in Kennewick. That will be with their first branch in the Tri-Cities and they also still have a home loan center within their main branch at 106 W. Nora.

For more information on STCU, visit- http://stcu.org

Spokane Overstock becomes Wallaroo's Furniture and Mattresses, opens more locations

Spokane Overstock has come along way from their beginnings as small furniture business in a Spokane Valley warehouse . While they do still have a store in Spokane Valley they have grown to 5 locations, in just a few years. And, 2 more are coming in near future, but before that they are re-branding.

From here on out Spokane Overstock is converting their stores over to a new name, Wallaroo's Furniture and Mattresses. Wallaroo's says they will still offer the same overstock furniture and mattresses at discounted prices, just as they have before however;

They are growing as well, with the recent opening of a new 5th location, this time on N. Division just outside of Downtown Spokane. This new Wallaroo's location is in a building that has been vacant for sometime and now has new life and pretty cool new turquoise paint job, very eye catching. This new location is in the former Comfort City location at 1001 N. Division.

In addition to the new Spokane location, our friends over at boisedev.com have reported Wallaroo's Furniture and Mattresses will soon be the new tenant of retail building at 5804 Fairview in Boise. This will be their 6th store and the second time they have opened a store outside of the Inland Northwest as they also operate a store in Missoula.

Wallaroo's Furniture and Mattresses keeps their prices lower then their competitors buy purchasing overstocked merchandise from a number of large retailers. Their items are still top quality and are recognizable brand names, with most every type of mattress and furniture available and all stores are open 7 days a week.

For more information on Wallaroo's Furniture and Mattresses, check their website at-
http://spokaneoverstock.net  ( I'm guessing their going to change this url too eventually )

Where the Halloween stores will be in our area...

Despite 90+ degree temperatures and poor air quality as I’m writing this we’re actually only a couple of months away from fall and Halloween. And as you may know, in the weeks before Halloween, several vacant stores fronts in our area fill up with locations of the Spirit Halloween chain.

So, while they don’t open for a little while from my writing this ( on Aug 15th ). Here is where the Spokane and Coeur d’ Alene area Spirit stores will be-

15505 E Broadway , Spokane Valley ( former Toys r Us )

2512 E 29th , Spokane ( former Hastings )

12312 N Division , Spokane ( former Albertsons )

101 E. Best Ave, Coeur d’ Alene ( former 50 percent off card shop )

In addition to Spirit Halloween stores a Halloween Express store will open again this year. They will be in the former Hastings store at 1704 W Wellesley Ave. , where they were last year. Party City, with stores at North Pointe Plaza and in Spokane Valley always  dedicates large sections of their stores towards Halloween costumes and decor.

If you want to shop local, which I encourage you to do, Party Palace at 2607 N Division is the place to check out. They also have a large selection of Halloween merchandise every year!

Construction underway for Ponderosa Village, a new commercial development in Spokane Valley

We first mentioned the new Ponderosa Village project back around the first of the year. If you don't already know about this project, it's a cool new commercial development with several buildings to be built along the 11200 block of S. Dishman-Mica Rd in Spokane Valley. The project will be built out in phases and the developers promise to make it a neighborhood oriented center, listening to the wants of the area when bringing in businesses to the site.

The whole project will surround and will be anchored by Barney's Harvest Foods, a grocery store that's already at the site. And, although it's happening a bit later then originally expected, we're happy to report that construction is finally underway!

We stopped by the site yesterday ( 8/15/18 ) and observed substantial site work, and even some early foundation work. And, while clearly it will be some time before any businesses actually open there, we are already learning what will likely be there. One space has been leased to a spa / salon to be called The Mix Salon & Day Spa, and i'm told they will likely have a coffee shop and a restaurant coming that will be announced soon.

Since this project was announced the owners have also acquired a small lot to the east of the grocery store, allowing for the completed Ponderosa Village to be slightly larger then originally planned. When fully built out Ponderosa Village will have 6600 square feet of space, 15 possible retail spaces, and 180 convenient parking spaces.

If your interested in leasing space at Ponderosa Village, check their website at http://ponderosavillagespokane.com and follow along on their Facebook page.

Note-  This site is not affiliated with the project.
