Walgreens eyes Downtown Spokane site for new " community pharmacy " concept

Walgreens, the huge national pharmacy chain is coming to Downtown Spokane. But, this won't be a traditional Walgreens as most people know them, that's because this store will be part of their newer community pharmacy concept of stores. This means this new store won't have any retail sales, just the pharmacy.

Per an article from a recently opened location in Grand Rapid,Mi. these stores are specialty pharmacy's geared towards patient care for those battling complex conditions like cancer, CF and others. The stores are small with room for just the pharmacy and some support / employee office space.

The planned Spokane Walgreens Community Pharmacy location will be approximately 1300 square feet on the South side of Downtown Spokane. The store will be in the recently remodeled building at 327 W. 3rd, at the corner of 3rd & Washington. Currently the store is in the planning phase but notes on the plan indicate the may begin construction as early as the middle of April.

The Mango Tree Indian Kitchen + Tap House to replace Hill's in Downtown Spokane

Hills Restaurant & Lounge was a favorite of many, but as many now know the Downtown eatery closed their doors for the last time on Feb. 28th, the owners cite many reasons for this closure. But, while Hill's is no more their building won't be empty for very long.

The building, which can be found at 401 W. Main, across from Auntie's Bookstore has already been leased and will continue to be a resturant. It will become a new location of The Mango Tree Indian Kitchen + Tap House with renovations to begin later this month.

The Mango Tree opened just last year over in Coeur d' Alene and is actually affiliated with small Canadian chain. The menu however is somewhat different then that of their Canadian locations. The menu of The Mango Tree is focused on curry dishes and grilled items although the restaurant has most all common Indian dishes from Tandoor Chicken to Butter Chicken, Kebab's and everything in-between. As is implied by the name dinners also can order from a selection of beers and wines and appitzers and desserts are available.

The new Mango Tree location in Downtown Spokane is planned to open sometime in May.

More info can be found by finding them on Facebook or at http://the-mango-tree-restaurant.business.site

Homesick Candles introduces a candle that smells like Spokane?!? #notsponsored

It sounds like a joke, but yes, you can now make your home smell like Spokane. I mean you could also just open your window if you still live here but fresh air is overrated anyways.

But, judging by the candle companies name it's somewhat geared towards those who have left and are "homesick" . The Spokane candle is made by Homesick Candles, a growing company that's made a name for themselves selling candles that have scents of many different cities, states and even countries. There are even some that are supposed to have scents that bring back memories of holidays, special places and even special occasion's.

Homesick Candles are sold at $29.99 and are made in the US from all natural soy wax meant to burn for 60-80 hours.

So, according to Homesick Candles what does Spokane smell like? They describe it as...
" herbs and honeysuckle reminiscent of Centennial Trail hikes through the sunny side of the state. Home of 3 on 3 basketball. Notes of carnation to celebrate fathers around the world " .

If your interesting in smelling Spokane ( or Austin or France or one of dozens of other locations ) check them out at-
http://homesickcandles.com/collections/college-towns/products/spokane-candle

This is not sponsored, and I do not get anything off of the sales of their products. Just wanted to share...

Construction starts for new Spokane Federal Credit Union / Revel 77 Coffee shared building in Spokane Valley

Earlier this week construction kicked off to renovate an existing building in Spokane Valley into a branch for a growing local credit union and a coffee shop. The building, which is at 13105 E. Sprague Ave. has been a mini mart and used car dealership in recent history and will be completely redone with an all new modern look. Design work for the project was done locally by HDG Architecture and construction will also be done locally with Baker Construction acting as the general contactor for the project.

They estimate to have the project done and the businesses open sometime around July of this year. Spokane Federal Credit Union will be the main tenant taking 2100 square feet. The new location will be staffed by about 3-4 employees trained in both member services and loans so no matter what the need, someone will be able to help.

This is Spokane Federal Credit Union's first location outside of the City of Spokane, currently they are based nearby the Spokane Arena at 601 W. Mallon Ave. . The Credit Union says they have heard members need for more access to banking in Spokane Valley and are excited to begin this project.

The remaining 1200 square feet of the building will be a new Revel 77 Coffee shop. This will be the second location for Revel 77 Coffee, which opened back in 2012 on the South Hill at 3223 E. 57th Suite K. The new Spokane Valley location will be similar to the South Hill store.

Flatstick Pub to open in old Macy's Building in Downtown Spokane

Flatstick Pub, a Seattle based pub and restaurant has announced they will open in the remaining vacant street level space of The M building ( the former Downtown Macy's ) in Downtown Spokane. Flatstick Pub is a unique concept developed by Spokane natives Sam and Andy Largent. There locations are casual beer pubs that also feature a challenging 9 hole miniature golf course in the same place.

An example photo from one of Flatstick Pub's Seattle locations

In addition to the mini golf, customers can play a selection of golf themed games that we're invented by Flatstick. Those include Duffleboard, Cup Hunter, Stick Putt and 2 more new games set to debut with the opening of the Spokane location.

The Pub will have 30 taps pouring only locally made beer, cider and wine. The owners also will partner with Seattle based restaurateur Ethan Stowell to develop a cool new food menu. The entire place will be open to all ages until 7pm each day and they note it will even by dog friendly.

Currently they operate 3 very popular locations in the Pioneer Square and South Lake Union neighborhoods of Seattle and one in Kirkland. The company was founded in 2014 and has grown quickly, as is expected of such a cool and unique concept. They also are excellent community partners, giving $140,000 to charites in 2018 and they plan to continue donating in the each of the areas they operate.

Donut Parade to re-open!

There have been some rumors lately that the Spokane landmark, The Donut Parade, might be reopening. And, now our friends over at KREM 2 News have confirmed this and they even have the scoop on what the newly revamped Donut Parade will include. Even though it sounds like it will still be largely the same as before!

Here’s there story from the KREM 2 YouTube page, we’ll try to get a story of our own closer to when they open.

At Home to open a store in Coeur d' Alene

Soon the At Home chain will have 2 places to call home in the Inland Northwest. Earlier this year it was confirmed that At Home will be opening in a part of the former N. Division Costco building. That store is supposed to open sometime around April of this year and will soon after be joined by a Texas Roadhouse and another yet to be named tenant.

But, that won't be the only store in our area for the Texas based chain. The company will also begin construction soon to convert the former Kmart store in Coeur d' Alene into another At Home store. The store will occupy the entire building, meaning the store will be about 87,400 square feet or a similar size to the planned Spokane store. The Coeur d' Alene store will open sometime later this year, we will update when we know a more exact date.

Improvements will also be done to the site, including a full renovation of the area that was Kmart's garden center. That space will not be part of the At Home store but will instead be a multi tenant commercial space for retail and restaurants. The main building will also be largely updated.

At Home is a Plano,TX based chain of big box stores that carry over 50,000 unique items including furniture, garden, housewares, rugs, home décor and a lot of seasonal merchandise. They consider themselves " The Home & Holiday Décor Superstore ". They are adding new stores rapidly but a recent count showed them at about 600 stores. These will be the first At Home stores to come to our area however.

Spokesman Review to relocate printing operations to Spokane Valley

Soon the Spokesman Review will no longer be printed in Downtown Spokane, like it has been for so many years. The Spokesman's owner Cowles Co. recently announced that all printing will be shifted to a new facility in the 19000 block of E. Euclid, close to the Spokane Business & Industrial Park. The move will likely happen around the end of the year with all 70+ employees keeping their jobs.

The new Spokane Valley Spokesman Review facility will also house a newly purchased smaller, more versatile printing press. The hope is that they can expand their outside printing contracts as the new press is able to print more efficiently and at times in smaller batches.

A key part of the Spokesman's move is freeing up the prime Downtown spaces for new uses. Currently the Spokesman Review is printed a huge 168,000 square foot building on Monroe St, just steps away from some of Spokane's best shops and dining. They say the building could be easily converted into breweries, restaurants or retail. Although there are no plans set just yet as the facility will still be printing the newspaper throughout much of 2019.

A couple of weeks ago Green Bay,WI based Shopko filed for bankruptcy. And, while the retail chain expects to continue operating they have added several more stores to their planned closure list, including all of the remaining Spokane area stores.

At this point the Shopko store in Coeur d’ Alene appears to be unaffected. No word on what may replace any of these stores.

Reports say Texas Roadhouse is coming to Spokane

Back in July we shared some information about the possibility of a Texas Roadhouse coming to Spokane. At that time they had appeared as a tenant name in the plans for the former N. Division Costco building. And, while some of those plans didn’t stay in the plan, we can happily report that our friends over at Spokane Journal of Business published that Texas Roadhouse is confirmed to be building at the site.

Here is their article ( be aware they have a paywall )-

https://www.spokanejournal.com/local-news/costco-completes-sale-of-north-side-property/

We’ll be running our own article about this in the coming days but the short story is that Texas Roadhouse will open in the parking lot area where the Costco fuel station had been. The main Costco building will primarily be a new At Home store which we touched on briefly back in the Fall-
http://www.inlandnwbusiness.com/2018/10/permits-indicate-at-home-is-coming-to.html?m=1

This will leave one section without a set tenant just yet. However it looks likely a storage facility will go into that space.

But, for now if you’re looking for more info on Texas Roadhouse check them out at-

Yaya Brewing opening soon in Spokane Valley

A new brewery is on it's way to Spokane Valley. In fact construction is already getting underway for the new Yaya Brewing Company, coming soon to 11712 E. Montgomery.

They will open later this year, with an opening date a bit more up in the air then usual with the recent government shut down. But, they will be opening and when they do they will have a production facility and tasting room, both at the same site. The production side will include a 10-barrel brewhouse with 60-barrel production capacity.

Beer lovers will be able to visit Yaya Brewing in a planned 900 square tasting room. That space will include plenty of seating, several TV's and 10-15 taps. Of that 9-13 will be reserved for beers brewed by Yaya Brewing and the rest will be other locally brewed beers and ciders. Their beers will be brewed with high quality ingredients that are locally sourced whenever possible. They plan to brew several types of beers, which we'll likely profile a bit more when they open.

This new brewery is being dedicated in memory of the owners sister, Lara. They say Lara was very community oriented and they intend to follow suit with the creation of their flagship beer, the Angel IPA. 1% of the tasting room sales of the Angel IPA will be donated back to local charites.

Yaya Brewing will be a quality beer driven brewery with no kitchen. However they do plan to have some pre-packaged snacks and will likely partner with many local food trucks to bring in something for guests to eat at times.

We'll check back in with Yaya Brewing as they get closer to opening, but they do have a website coming soon to http://yayabrewing.com

And, follow their progress on Facebook at- http://www.facebook.com/yayabrewco

High Tide Lobster Bar coming to Downtown Spokane

A small restaurant serving fresh lobster in Downtown Spokane ?!? Yes, really....

Watch for High Tide Lobster Bar coming soon to the space above Numerica Credit Union at 502 W. Riverside. High Tide will be the next venture of Chef Chad White, who's already known locally for his other Downtown restaurant, Zona Blanca, a delicious ceviche bar located inside the Steel Barrel Tap Room on Madison. Not so locally White was also a contestant on season 13 of Bravo TV's Top Chef.

High Tide Lobster Bar will be small with only some seating as the space was last used as Thomas Hammer Coffee kiosk location. But despite the size High Tide will still be very cool and very unique for Spokane. Watch for a quick service menu of lobster sandwiches, other sandwiches , chowder and salad.

Currently the plans call for High Tide Lobster Bar to open for business by the end of February. In addition to this project Chef Chad White is also collaborating with the local TT's Old Iron Brewery in opening a new brewery and Kansas City style BBQ restaurant coming later this year to 4110 S Bowdish ( at Dishman-Mica ) in Spokane Valley. But, more on that soon...

New life will soon be coming back to a presently abandoned warehouse on the east side of Downtown Spokane. Plans are in the works now to re-develop the former Pacific Fruit & Produce building at 102 E. Main into a small multi-use building.

About 3200 square feet for an office tenant, 3400 square feet for a yet to be named restaurant, and about 1100 square feet for a yet to be named coffee shop tenant. The office tenant space will be used by JMK & Associates , a financial advisory firm currently located at 421 W. Riverside, they will move to the new space once it is completed.

According to documents filed with the City of Spokane the re-development project will cost an estimated $500,000 with design work being done by HDG Architecture. No contractor name is mentioned as of yet.

Roasters Coffee planning Spokane locations

If you've spent any time in the Tri-Cities in the last few years you've likely at least seen a location of the Roasters Coffee chain. The chain is a 10 year old brand of drive thru coffee stands with about 10  stores around the Tri-Cities and Walla Walla. And, now Roasters is planning to expand to the Inland Northwest with new stores coming soon to the Spokane area.

They are planning a location at 2505 W. Northwest Blvd. which they hope to have open by the end of 2019. Another location is planned in 2020 near Airway Heights along US 2 and others are in the works in Spokane Valley on Argonne Rd. and Evergreen. They say their goal stands at 5 stores in 5 years and then setting a long and committed goal towards reaching the entire population.

Roasters Coffee has been roasting their own coffee since 2011, they roast daily and have the same coffees from the same farms year after year. Wes Hayden, owner of Roasters tells me " we might be considered fast casual coffee but the guarantee is the coffee your getting is high specialty grade coffee roasted extremely well. Which isn't true for many drive thru chains ".

He goes on to say " one of the things we focus on is the coffee, that will always be our first goal ". Also Roasters Coffee brings more value to the people and communities they serve, last year they offered a day a month in revenue to local charities. Roasters Coffee is truly a community driven coffee company.

For more info on Roasters Coffee, check out their website at - http://roasterscoffee.net

And, for a better idea of the company I recommend reading an interview with the owner Wes Hayden from 2016 at - http://tri-cityherald.com/news/local/article95437422.html

103.5 The Game launches as Spokane's newest radio station

Radio Spokane has launched a new radio station that's sort of a re-branding from a previous station. Mapleton Communications, which does business as Radio Spokane, has switched the format of KGA 1510 AM and brought on a translator station at 103.5 to re-broadcast the channel to the more common FM radio.

The station switched just this week and now plays a mix of sports and hip hop, geared to take on Hot 96.9 Spokane's other hip hop geared top 40 station. The station will primarily be a music station but will continue on with games from Gonzaga, Spokane Chiefs and the Spokane Indians, which is a holdover from KGA's previous sports format.

This is the first radio station launch in Spokane market since Alt 96.1 took the place of a country station back in March.

For more info on 103.5 The Game, visit their new website at http://1035thegame.com where you can also stream the new station.

This is huge as 1% of the US population has celiac disease and up to 5% of the population suffer from some level of gluten intolerance.

Eric & Jeanie Smith, owners of Cole's say they have seen steady growth since they opened their doors. " We have many local families that love our food and have supported us from the beginning " Jeanie said. The restaurant has also attracted customers from around the region including Pullman, Moses Lake and Coeur d' Alene.

With the new larger space Cole's will be expanding into the wholesale baking market. " We hope to help restaurants and stores around the region meet their customers demands for more and better gluten-free options on their menus " Eric said. In addition to providing wholesale services Cole's will seek to expand their own bakery and restaurants offerings for individuals following the Keto diet.

The Cole's menu has also been expanded with new offerings such as curry ravioli and chicken parmesan. Ice cream in gluten-free cones and shaved ice will also be available for customers eating in or at the drive-thru window. Cole's is even open seven days a week with breakfast, lunch and dinner offered.

For those not able to travel to their location in North Spokane, delivery is also now available via Treehouse Deliveries and Cole's can be found regularly at the Kendall Yards farmers market during the spring and summer months.

Rest assured this site will never become a big mess of advertising. But, as a thank you from time to time I may suggest someone we work with solely as a recommendation.

One such partner is Kyle Sargent with Comcast Business. If you’re opening a business or need new service give him a call and let him know you were sent by Matt at Inland Northwest Business Watch!

New Business Openings, plus the future of this blog...

I'm kicking off 2019 by looking back at some off the newer businesses opening in the Spokane area. This is not everything coming but a good amount of highlights, some I may post about later and if you know of something I've missed feel free to contact me at inlandbusiness@yahoo.com

I'm planning some big things in 2019 and a kind of re-think of this site. I'm hoping to follow up more on businesses after they open and do more tours of businesses for the readers. On the larger scale I'm hoping to branch out into making videos of new businesses on the blog's YouTube channel and livestreaming on Instagram and Facebook. Oh, and I think it's time for a give away or two...

If your a business owner that wants to arrange a look at your new location, or to partner someway in a give away or discounts, please get in touch with me at inlandbusiness@yahoo.com
