New Spokesman Review plant goes vertical in the Valley

The Spokesman Review is pushing forward with their plans to print the paper and some other printing projects in Spokane Valley. As most know the Spokesman Review has been printed in Downtown Spokane for decades, but times are changing and it was announced recently that the paper plans to acquire a new smaller, more efficient printing press and relocate where it is printed. This allows them to open up the Downtown building for re-development.

Baker Construction is the contractor for the new facility which will be in a 65000 square foot at 19223 E Euclid, just off of Barker Rd in Spokane Valley. And, as seen in the photos below construction of the main building has gone vertical with much of the outside wall panels now in place.

Printing operations are to begin at the site on or about March 1st, 2020. A couple more warehouses for other companies are planned to also be built at the same site in the near future.

Hardwick & Sons, with 80+ years in Seattle is moving to Post Falls

Hardwick & Sons is everything you'd want out of a family owned hardware store. Friendly folks with more merchandise then you could ever need and over 80 years in business. But, those 80 plus years ( 87 to be exact ) have been spent on the other side of the state, at 4214 Roosevelt Way NE in Seattle's University District.

So, why is Hardwick & Sons making news on a small local news blog almost 300 miles away? That's because Hardwick & Sons in moving, to Post Falls. Factors ranging from increasing crime and high property taxes have made the Hardwick family decide it's time to try something new. In fact really new as the business plans to build an all new building as well when they relocate to " Idaho's River City ".

Hardwick & Sons is currently working their way through the permitting / planning phases to construct a new 17,000 square foot building on Post Falls' east side. The business would have a 10,000 square foot retail store and a 7,000 square foot warehouse, which would in part store the products the business still sells on it's website. While the Post Falls store would still be a part of the original company they say it will be cleaned up a bit, while still selling many harder to find items.

The store is to be built on a couple of lots at 3820 / 3850 E. Mullan Ave , in-between a Domino's Pizza anchor strip mall and a Dutch Bros. Coffee stand. Construction likely won't begin till late Summer at the earliest but demolition work on the 2 homes that we're exsisting on the site has already begun.

Keep watching for more, and for a more in depth look at why Hardwick & Sons is planning the move, check out their interview on Seattle radio station KIRO 97.3 at

Stella's to return with new location in Downtown Spokane

Many still remember Stella's Café, the small but hip restaurant with an sandwich focused menu and a orange door near the Spokane Arena. Stella's merged in with Ruins, another restaurant by Chef Tony Brown, back in Jan of 2017.

Ruins, of course, continued on with an always changing menu and Chef Brown is also working on an all new restaurant that will be coming soon to Downtown Spokane's The Bickett Building. So needless to say he's kept busy even without a separate Stella's location,

But, now at little more then 2 years after Stella's left, it's coming back!

Stella's Café will return in a somewhat new version in the Saranac Commons building at 19 W. Main in Downtown Spokane. Taking advantage of the spaces that we're very recently emptied by Chef Jeremy Hansen's closures of his 2 businesses in that complex. The new Stella's is to open sometime next month and they say their old sandwich menu will return complete with several vegan and vegetarian options. They are also planning a "revamped lunch menu " with more salads, pastas and entrees.

Keep watching for more news on the new Stella's coming back to Downtown!

Is there hope for a Chick-fil-a in Spokane?

Important- This not a definitive confirmation that Chick-fil-a is coming but it is a good sign!

Chick-fil-a has recently filled for a SEPA application with the state for a parcel of land near the Y in North Spokane. Perhaps the rumors of Chick-fil-a coming to the Gonzaga campus inspired something?

The application, which would be an early phase of development, shows a 4833 square foot store at the corner of N Newport Hwy & Hoerner, or 9304 N Newport Hwy. . In the plans the Chick-fil-a name is mentioned several times. Commenting on application is now open and closes on 6/21/19. In the notes it indicates construction could start as early as later this summer.

Will Chick-fil-a be coming to Spokane soon? It looks very good but we’ll be giving it a little more time to say for sure! If you’d like to view the SEPA documents on the project for yourself check-

Take our survey and help shape the future of Inland Northwest Business Watch

Inland Northwest Business Watch is my passion. I know it's just a blog covering business & development news in a mid sized city, but I obsess over it, probably more then I should.

I want to help new businesses get the word out so that they can succeed. It's been a sort of a hobby of mine for most of my life, growing up in small town in Ohio I was the weird kid who would get excited over a new small store or even the hint of where the next big box store was going to open. I remember when I was a teenager and a factory was built near my house, I would take my dog over and just watch the construction workers work ( from a distance, not creepily of course ) . So it only makes sense that one day I would create this.

I am now going on 8 years of running this blog and it's time to start taking the next step so to speak. Similar sites like in Boise are full time operations, Instagrammer and blogger Spokane Eats' owner has become successful enough to have interns working under her. Needless to say we're still the little guys on the block.

I'm not making any announcements, but do want to see where to go from here. I have lots and lots of ideas and have created a survey to see what people are thinking. Because at the end of the day I want this site to be what the readers want.

Please take this quick 10 question survey, and at the end of it, leave your name and email address because on 6/14/19 I'll draw a random name to win a $10 gift card to Indaba Coffee Roasters!

The survey will be up if you are reading this after 6/14/19 but that is the end of the give away.

Pizza place and brewery to open in new Spokane Valley building

A few months ago we mentioned the construction of a new commercial building at the corner of E. Sprague & Flora, next to Ziggy's in Spokane Valley. The building shell itself is now complete and work is happening now to build out the space for 2 tenants who compliment each other quite nicely.

The building, with an address of 17018 E. Sprague, will house a brewery and a pizza place. Both businesses we're already established elsewhere in Spokane Valley, with one moving here and another opening a second location here.

Here is who is opening soon at corner of Sprague & Flora-

River City Pizza

River City Pizza is a locally owned and operated pizza place that is a favorite of many with a location on N. Harvard Rd. in Otis Orchards. They will keep that location open as well, making this their new second location.

This new River City Pizza location will be about 2500 square feet and will offer carry out and delivery pizzas as well as a few other menu items. The new location should open sometime around the middle of July.

For more info on River City Pizza, check out their website at

Genus Brewing and Supply

Genus Brewing has evolved since their opening as Nu Home Brew & Bottles back in 2013. They are moving from their originally location further west of Sprague to the corner of Sprague & Flora.

There hasn't been an opening date announced just yet but they will likely be opening in the coming weeks as they are further along in the remodeling process. Like River City Pizza, the space for Genus Brewing will also be about 2500 square feet and will be larger then their original location.

Their new store will serve beers made on site by Genus, as well as some home brewing supplies. They won't serve food at first but will have seating for 43. The owners next door at River City say they hope to work together at times but exact plans aren't certain so early in the building process.

Linnie's Thai Cuisine re-opens on Sunset Hwy.

Linnie's Thai Cuisine is back! Linnie's has operated in Downtown Spokane since 2004, and other local locations since as far back as 1990. But, last year it was announced that Volunteers of America would be purchasing the site Linnie's stood on Downtown for a new homeless housing project. Linnie's owners wasted no time in finding a new location to provide their delicious Thai dishes to the masses.

The restaurant's owners have recently re-opened in the former Asian Restaurant building at 5306 W. Sunset Hwy. about 2 miles west of Government Way. The owner and chef E Muongkhoth says he is still serving up authentic, quality Thai food that customers have come to love over the years, and " everyone is happy ".

And, he must have made a few people happy as this month marks the beginning of Linnie's Thai Cuisine's 29 year in business. Muongkhoth came to the United States as political refugee from Laos in 1979, finding his way to Spokane in 1984. Working for others at first until he opened the first location of this restaurant with just $6,000.

Linnie's Thai Cuisine is open M-F 11-9 and Sat. 4-9pm. They can be reached anytime at 509-747-5760 and a menu can be found on

A look at Spokane's first indoor aquarium, Blue Zoo, with photos!

In case you haven't already heard, Spokane is about to get a brand new indoor aquarium!

The new business is under construction now and will be called Blue Zoo. Blue Zoo is expected to open sometime this Summer, next door to Buffalo Wild Wings in Northtown Mall. Recently, Blue Zoo was nice enough to allow us a tour of their progress, and from what we saw I can safely say it will be unlike anything Spokane has ever seen.

While not as large as the established aquariums in bigger cities, Blue Zoo will pack their 11,000 square feet full of dozens of species of animals. Even more unique, Blue Zoo will have a couple of rooms included to see birds and lizards as well. There will even be scheduled mermaid and a pirate shows!

Among the attractions will be 30,000 gallon shark tank with kids crawl, Giant Pacific Octopus Tank and designated tanks for everything from fresh water fish to predator's! A full list of their attractions is on their website listed below. I can safely say Blue Zoo will be a must do for anyone who is even remotely interested in fish and marine life.

Blue Zoo is still at least a couple months away from opening to the public. But, annual passes are already up for sale and with early bird pricing they are cheaper now then they may ever be again. Passes are for sale from an individual economy pass for $39 up to the Ultimate Family Annual Pass which allows 2 adults and unlimited children access to Blue Zoo anytime during open hours for just $199. Also after opening, guests will be able to check out Blue Zoo via daily passes but the annual pass provides a more budget friendly approach. A full rundown of all pricing is available on their website at

In addition to the main attraction, Blue Zoo will also have a gift shop at the entrance and a birthday party room available for anyone to rent from $249+ or $199+ if you have an annual pass! Themed birthday parties will also be available as will mermaid and pirate meet and greets. More info on birthday parties are also available on their web site.

Watch for hopefully many more updates as Blue Zoo develops and opens this Summer. And, for business owners Blue Zoo is excited to offer sponsorship opportunities, contact them directly for more on those incredible opportunities.

In the mean time, follow their progress via their website at

Or on social media @bluezoospokane on Instagram or on Facebook at

And, now some photos from Blue Zoo, the photos of fish are actual fish taken inside Blue Zoo and are not stock images.

Terrain's Pop Up Shop getting new name, moving to River Park Square

Pop Up Shop is planning to pop up in a new, larger location soon. Despite the name, Pop Up Shop is actually a permanent retail shop that has called the Steam Plant Square building home for a few years now. The shop is a part of the non profit arts organization Terrain and is retailer of various products, gifts, apparel , home items and more from local artisans and makers. A sign on the window explains the business sells items that are " Spokane sourced, Spokane made " .

But, work has already begun to relocate the store to a new much larger location, still in Downtown Spokane however. The Pop Up Shop will move into the former Whiz Kids storefront on the second floor of River Park Square ( Whiz Kids moved to the other end of the mall a while ago ). It will also dawn a new name and logo better reflecting the purpose behind the business. After the move the store will be called From Here.

From Here will now have 4200 square feet of space, a significant increase in space from the former location. The new space will allow From Here to sell all the same items as before, but they will also be able to accommodate an additional 25 artists and makers.

Several renderings of what the completed store will look like line the windows of the new space and workers are inside moving the get the new store operational. In fact plans call for From Here to open as early as the end of this month, we'll hopfully follow up on their opening as the time gets closer.

New building planned for Domino's / other tenant on 3rd in Downtown Spokane.

Watch for construction to start in the coming weeks at the corner of Third & Howard in Downtown Spokane. Workers will soon demolish the existing building on the Southwest side of that intersection and replace it with a new 2 story commercial building. Most recently the existing building has been a Mexican restaurant called Cinco de Mayo, and a few other businesses have also came and went from the space in recent years.

After demolition, construction will start on the new building, which will be a little larger then 6000 square feet. A good section of the new building will be a new Domino's Pizza location, one other tenant will join the building but no word on who that might be. Domino's Pizza already has a location about a block and a half west of the site so it is believed that location will relocate here.

Electric Car Maker planning new plant on the West Plains

Another potentially huge employer is coming to the West Plains! Brea,CA based Mullen Technologies, Inc. has signed a letter of intent with the West Plains - Airport Area Public Development Authority to develop a massive new plant near Airway Heights.

Mullen Technologies, Inc. intends to use the new Spokane facility to manufacture their Qiantu K50 super-EV electric sports car. The company will ramp up employment in phases, but they hope to employ about 860 people locally by 2026. While 2026 is a few years away however, Mullen is working the PDA already to locate a 100,000 +/- square foot facility to begin production on the West Plains as early as this year. Initially they will employ 55.

That facility will be temporary however, as Mullen will lease a huge new building from the West Plains - Airport Area PDA. No exact address was given but it is explained as about 1 mile SW of the new Exotic Metals Forming,Inc. plant on McFarlane Rd. This would actually place the new facility relatively close to the currently under construction Amazon Fulfillment Center.

The new facility for Mullen Technologies,Inc. will be built in 2 phases, phase one would be 500,000 square feet and complete by about this time in 2021. A second phase of 800,000 square feet would follow and likely house the company's next gen lithium battery research and development, which may mean even more new jobs.

The Qiantu K50, which the company will make here was introduced just last week at the New York International Auto Show. The sleek all electric sports car will have an expected $125,000 median price, a look at the car itself can be found at ( although the article says the car will be built in California, which is no longer accurate)

This is a developing story which we continue to watch...

New renderings are out for The Falls Tower project

Spokane is really growing up! Quite literally....

Via the Spokane subreddit we've uncovered this exciting new rendering of The Falls project in the North Bank area just north of Downtown Spokane. Currently the developer LB Stone Properties has demolished the former YWCA building to make way for the construction of the first tower. You'll notice the project now includes a 3rd tower which was mentioned in a recent article in the Journal of Business ( )

Once complete The Falls will include-
126 apartments
26 condos
124 room hotel
20000-30000 square feet of office space
20000-27000 square feet of retail / restaurant space
And, this is just the figures without the newly added third tower!

All with and parking facility to be build on 3 floors underground. Obviously with a project of this scale it'll take some time so we won't even speculate about what will open when. But, if built out as we see today this will be a game changer for the North Bank.

New restaurants coming to the Downtown Spokane's Bickett Building

In 2014 the former Bickett Hotel building at 225 W. Riverside in Downtown Spokane underwent a stunning restoration. The building's owner, Jed Conklin renovated the building's upper 2 floors into 8 new apartments that today are very in demand.

At the same time the ground floor also received some updates but has sat vacant and for lease for since then. That is until now as three exciting new businesses are in the works, we'll hopefully have individual posts about each in the near future, but here is an overview of what we know...

Eyvind is a project of Chef Tony Brown, who also owns Ruins, a small and ever changing restaurant on North Monroe. The unique name is a nod to Mr. Eyvind Earles who was an artist known in part for his background illustrations in 1950's era Disney films. He is best known for his background and styling in the 1951 classic Sleeping Beauty.

In a previous interview, Brown described his plan for Eyvind to be a more polished version of Ruins. It will likely be very vegetable forward seasonal local ingredients .

Another project that Chef Tony Brown is involved with will actually be in the basement of The Bickett building. That new restaurant will be called Hunt and will be a small space serving what is being called elevated campfire food.

Redband is a project of the building's owner Jed Conklin. A bit different from the other 2 new places, Redband won't be an everyday restaurant, but instead gathering space. The new space will offer a dining set up and full bar and will be available to rent for gatherings of up 60 guests.

Tarascon Empanadas to bring Argentinian empanadas to Spokane

Something new is coming to Spokane's restaurant scene, traditional Argentinian empanadas!

This is due to the planned opening of Tarascon Empanadas at 9222 N. Newport Hwy in North Spokane. The new restaurant will be a quick service eatery in space that is shared with the exsisting Mr. Wok Chinese restaurant.

Tarascon Empanadas will be a locally owned and operated establishment being opened by members of the Alvarez family who came to the US from Argentina in 2002 and became US citizens here in Spokane in 2014. They say they have been making empanadas for years and have always had friends and neighbors are always very interested in trying them. And, soon all of Spokane will be able to...

Empanadas are savory pastries fill with variety of meat and vegetable fillings. According the their newly launched website they will offer pork, spinach, beef, ham and cheese, chicken and maybe more.

To help launch the restaurant Tarascon Empanada's owners have launched a fund raising page on Kickstarter that already as of my writing this is over 2/3 of the way funded and about 2 weeks left to go. More info about their Kickstarter is at-

And for more info on the new restaurant itself, check out their website at
