Johnson's Custom Jewelry to open in former Dodsons location

Last winter the Dodson's Jewelers closed their doors after 131 years in business. Since Dodson's was Spokane's longest running retail business it was a bit of an " end of an era ". But, very soon customers will be able to return to the same building at 516 W. Riverside for all of their jewelry needs.

That's because Johnson's Custom Jewelry is relocating into the former Dodson's store location and will open with a ribbon cutting tomorrow ( Sept 19th ) at 10:00am. Johnson's has spent the last 8 years operating from a much smaller 600 square foot space in the Downtown's Peyton Building, where they had done custom and repair work for the now closed Dodson's and other local jewelers.

This is a major expansion for Johnson's Custom Jewelry as their new shop is just shy of 3700 square feet. In the new shop, they plan to continue their work in custom jewelry design and repair, but will also include new inventory for walk-in's including a few different designer lines of engagement rings and wedding bands, as well as colored stone and diamond jewelry.

Johnson's Custom Jewelry points out they have a different approach then a typical jewelry store.
" You are often working directly with the person that is creating the jewelry, versus a salesperson which has to translate the ideas to the goldsmith " . And, unlike many jewelry businesses Johnsons Custom Jewelry is a completely locally owned and operated business.

Work underway for Blockhouse - Life coming to the South Perry area

New apartment construction is happening in every corner of Spokane, a product of a historically low vacancy rate. I usually skip a lot of these projects for posts on here because they are common place and don't really stand out. But one project, just getting underway is quite interesting and leading the way to bring a more environmentally conscious approach to urban dwellings.

Ground was broken last month for Blockhouse Life a new " smart " housing project in the South Perry neighborhood. The complex of 14 rental units will be located on the presently vacant lot at 1410 E. 10th, steps away from South Perry's restaurants and shops, and of course public transit.

The buildings will be built using cross-laminated timber or CLT, a new construction material that is made by gluing several layers of wood together in a lightweight but still strong manner. Each unit will also be equipped with a voice activated " smart wall " , with plumbing, mechanical systems, data/wifi and the majority of electrical systems all built into the wall at the factory before delivery. Solar panels will also be added to the site to produce energy for Blockhouse's tenants.

As construction is just getting started rental rates have not been released just yet, but we'll try to follow up on the Blockhouse project in the future. They also are already planning to replicate the same type of housing elsewhere in Spokane with a recent pre-development filing for a second Blockhouse development. That project will be build 16 units at 1757 N West Point Rd. at the top of Doomsday Hill on Spokane's northwest side. That project is still in planning phase but construction at the site might begin as early as the Summer of 2020.

The Pentagon Bistro & Martini Bar coming to Liberty Lake from the owners of The White House Grill

The owners of Post Falls' White House Grill are planning to expand once more with a new restaurant coming soon to Liberty Lake. Using the same political naming theme this new location will be called The Pentagon Bistro & Martini Bar.

The Pentagon Bistro & Martini Bar will be located in the former home of Corkhouse at 1400 N Meadowwood Ln and they hope to be open for business sometime around the middle of October. This is not their first stab at serving diners on the Washington side of the border as they also owned The West Wing on the South Hill, which closed due to them feeling " spread too thin " at the time. There was also a briefly lived White House Garlic Mobile food trailer that parked in Liberty Lake for a time not far away from where The Pentagon will soon open.

We're told the menu of The Pentagon will be similar to that of their Oval Office Martini Bar in Post Falls, with 20-25 small plates inspired by several international cuisines. In all The Pentagon will employ about 30.

A website is coming soon for more info at http://pentagonbistro.com

Feast World Kitchen coming to Downtown Spokane

Work has begun on the former Artic Circle / Sushi Yama building in Downtown Spokane to convert it to a new use. And, this will not only be a new use for the building but also something new to all of Spokane.

The building, which is located at 1321 W. 3rd Ave. , is becoming Feast World Kitchen. It will be an incubator kitchen to celebrate and empower immigrants and former refugees here in Spokane. Feast World Kitchen is a program of the non profit Feast Collective and will showcase food from many different cultures, inviting in different immigrant and former refugee chefs to highlight their culture and improve upon their own small business skills.

With this model, the menu will be ever changing with the types of dishes changing nightly. The current plan is to be take out style restaurant to start out and eventually grow their dining room, making it a hub for cross-cultural community. The space may even continue to evolve with cook classes, food truck rallies and private events all possible one day.

Feast World Kitchen is currently scheduled to open sometime in the fall. The project is being spearheaded Dan Todd, owner of the Inland Curry pop-up and Ross Carper, owner of The Compass Breakfast Wagon food truck. Dan and Ross are joined by a group of partners and advisors who intend to lend their expertise to the immigrant and refugee chefs who come to use Feast World Kitchen.

But, because starting such a venture doesn't come cheep they have recently launched a fundraiser on Indiegogo to raise $25,000 towards their plan. This site is not affiliated with the project but if you think you might be interested in joining me in helping Feast World Kitchen get off the ground, check out their page on Indiegogo at-

Sears to close Northtown Mall store.

The shrinking of Sears and Kmart continues with today’s announcement that the company will close an additional 25 stores . Sadly, the Sears store in Northtown Mall is on this store closure list.

The stores on this list will close in late October with going out of business sales starting around August 15th. The press release does not mention how many will lose their jobs as a result of the closure, although there will surely be some.

This leaves the Spokane area with only the Spokane Valley Mall Sears store open. The last Kmart in the Spokane area closed a few months ago and has since become a location for Uhaul. There is no news as of yet about what might take Sears’s place at Northtown.

New tenants coming to the Wonder Building

Even more exciting new tenants will soon be doing business in Spokane's former Wonder Bread factory, now known as the Wonder Building!

Abandoned for many years the building has been fully renovated and companies are wasting no time taking up the newly renovated space. Already Seattle based engineering firm Parametrix and the Seattle based Rover.com have moved their Spokane offices into the building.

Now Katerra, a California based company with a few divisions, including the production of cross laminated timber, has announced they will join the Wonder Building's tenant roster. The growing company will occupy about 10,000 square feet and they expect to move in sometime this fall. Katerra of course also is nearing completion of their new 250,000 square foot factory to produce CLT in Spokane Valley, which will likely come fully online in the coming months as well.

In addition to offering new Class A office space, the new building will have a 12,000 square foot market space. This area is not open just yet and no official announcements have been made about it. But, building permits are beginning to pop up from units within the market space. As is indicated by permits High Tide Lobster Bar will open a second location there and the Sandpoint based Evans Brothers Coffee Roasters will open some sort of coffee shop. We recently reached out for more info on what the future has in store for the Wonder Market area but are waiting to hear back at this time.

Old Navy and other changes coming to the Franklin Park Shopping Center

Spokane is about to get another Old Navy location. Currently the chain has a store in the plaza by Spokane Valley Mall, but now another store will be coming to serve North Spokane.

Construction is out for bid now for a new 18,563 square foot store to be located in-between Bed, Bath and Beyond and The Guitar Center at the Franklin Park Shopping Center on N. Division. At this point there is not a set opening date or published construction timeline but it will cause a significant remodel of that section of the shopping center.

Plato's Closet had a store open by the same space until a little over a week ago. They have since relocated a ways north and are now back open at 8117 N. Division. Also in the current floor plan The Guitar Center occupies some of the space as well, but construction will have that store moving just slightly to the North to abut Burlington Coat Factory. The remainder of that space that will become Old Navy was last an Outback Steakhouse that moved to Northtown Mall some time ago.

Interestingly, it looks like the Ross Dress for Less store at the other end of Franklin Park will undergo a big remodel soon with new look and façade. And, Ulta opened just a couple of months ago by Ross after moving to Franklin Park Shopping Center from Northtown Square Shopping Center.

As always stay tuned as we'll be keeping watch on this project as it progresses.

New Maverik at Ruby & Montgomery opening Thursday

The Maverik chain of gas stations & convenience stores has opened many locations locally since first coming to the Spokane/ Coeur d’ Alene area just a few years ago. But one location has prompted quite a few people to ask me about it’s opening date. Likely because of it’s prime location.

We can now report that the new Maverik at the corner of Ruby & Montgomery ( 28 E. Montgomery ) will open for business this Thursday, August 1st.

A full grand opening will happen from 4-8 with giveaways, swag and of course samples. The new location offers a 4300 square foot store featuring the chains Bonfire brand of hot foods in addition to all the traditional convenience store staples.

This is the 8th Maverick location in the Spokane area and 10th in the Inland Northwest. A couple more locations are also already in the works, more info on the company can be found on http://maverik.com

Tru by Hilton planning to open in Spokane Valley

Yet another company is choosing Spokane Valley as their first location in Washington State.

Tru by Hilton, a recently established, slightly more hip and technology forward brand from Hilton is in the planning phase for a new location just west of the Spokane Valley Mall.

A pre-development conference was filed recently with the City of Spokane Valley, but exact plans have yet to be seen by us. However from what we do know the new hotel would be a four story building with 43000 plus square feet. It will be built nearby Mirabeau Park at corner of Mansfield Ave. and Mirabeau Pkwy.

NOTE: This is not a rendering of the exact Spokane Valley location, just a rendering of an average Tru by Hilton hotel. Almost all look much like this with the exception of number of floors.

Tru by Hilton hotels offer "Eat & Sip" markets , mobile check in, digital keys, lobby tablets and a social media wall among other unique features that set the Tru by Hilton brand apart from others and make it an attractive choice for millennials and a younger crowd of traveler.

While this will be the first Tru by Hilton hotel in Washington, the brand has been growing and they even have locations as close as Meridian,ID. The chain has over 100 locations already open for business and many more in development, just like the new Spokane Valley location.

For more info on Tru by Hilton, check out their website at http://tru3.hilton.com

Metro Express Car Wash to build new location near the Fairgrounds

Plans call for a 7462 square foot building for the main car wash with a 210' conveyor to run cars though. The back of the lot would offer about 20 vacuums stalls. A small office would also be built for staff, etc. on the same site.

The new car wash project is currently out to bid for construction with no set opening date listed. For more info on Metro Express Car Wash, visit their corporate site at-

New Spokesman Review plant goes vertical in the Valley

The Spokesman Review is pushing forward with their plans to print the paper and some other printing projects in Spokane Valley. As most know the Spokesman Review has been printed in Downtown Spokane for decades, but times are changing and it was announced recently that the paper plans to acquire a new smaller, more efficient printing press and relocate where it is printed. This allows them to open up the Downtown building for re-development.

Baker Construction is the contractor for the new facility which will be in a 65000 square foot at 19223 E Euclid, just off of Barker Rd in Spokane Valley. And, as seen in the photos below construction of the main building has gone vertical with much of the outside wall panels now in place.

Printing operations are to begin at the site on or about March 1st, 2020. A couple more warehouses for other companies are planned to also be built at the same site in the near future.

Hardwick & Sons, with 80+ years in Seattle is moving to Post Falls

Hardwick & Sons is everything you'd want out of a family owned hardware store. Friendly folks with more merchandise then you could ever need and over 80 years in business. But, those 80 plus years ( 87 to be exact ) have been spent on the other side of the state, at 4214 Roosevelt Way NE in Seattle's University District.

So, why is Hardwick & Sons making news on a small local news blog almost 300 miles away? That's because Hardwick & Sons in moving, to Post Falls. Factors ranging from increasing crime and high property taxes have made the Hardwick family decide it's time to try something new. In fact really new as the business plans to build an all new building as well when they relocate to " Idaho's River City ".

Hardwick & Sons is currently working their way through the permitting / planning phases to construct a new 17,000 square foot building on Post Falls' east side. The business would have a 10,000 square foot retail store and a 7,000 square foot warehouse, which would in part store the products the business still sells on it's website. While the Post Falls store would still be a part of the original company they say it will be cleaned up a bit, while still selling many harder to find items.

The store is to be built on a couple of lots at 3820 / 3850 E. Mullan Ave , in-between a Domino's Pizza anchor strip mall and a Dutch Bros. Coffee stand. Construction likely won't begin till late Summer at the earliest but demolition work on the 2 homes that we're exsisting on the site has already begun.

Keep watching for more, and for a more in depth look at why Hardwick & Sons is planning the move, check out their interview on Seattle radio station KIRO 97.3 at http://mynorthwest.com/1435648/dori-hardwick-sons/

Stella's to return with new location in Downtown Spokane

Many still remember Stella's Café, the small but hip restaurant with an sandwich focused menu and a orange door near the Spokane Arena. Stella's merged in with Ruins, another restaurant by Chef Tony Brown, back in Jan of 2017.

Ruins, of course, continued on with an always changing menu and Chef Brown is also working on an all new restaurant that will be coming soon to Downtown Spokane's The Bickett Building. So needless to say he's kept busy even without a separate Stella's location,

But, now at little more then 2 years after Stella's left, it's coming back!

Stella's Café will return in a somewhat new version in the Saranac Commons building at 19 W. Main in Downtown Spokane. Taking advantage of the spaces that we're very recently emptied by Chef Jeremy Hansen's closures of his 2 businesses in that complex. The new Stella's is to open sometime next month and they say their old sandwich menu will return complete with several vegan and vegetarian options. They are also planning a "revamped lunch menu " with more salads, pastas and entrees.

Keep watching for more news on the new Stella's coming back to Downtown!

This will be their fourth location as they also have restaurants open in Everett and two in Seattle. The new location will use the same menu as the other locations, with both Irish and American fare. There also will of course be liquor with an extensive whisky list, Irish beers, local microbrews and more.

Watch for a new addition to Downtown Spokane's craft beer and dining scene coming soon in a historic building. Construction is happening now to open the new River Rock Taphouse on the ground floor of Chronicle Building at 926 W. Sprague. Local craft beer offerings will be a highlight of the River Rock, but they plan a delicious food menu as well that will be available during all business hours. Second Harvest planning new building to combat child hunger

Second Harvest is our area's largest food bank, benefiting all ages and walks of life. One of their main missions is childhood hunger. And, as it is explained on their website " Getting healthy food to children who need it most is a fundamental goal of Second Harvest".

Part of reaching this goal is their recently announced plans to expand their footprint to a new building. Second Harvest has acquired the 21,000 square foot facility at 402 N. Perry, which it will remodel and re-open as the Wolff Family Child Hunger Solution Center. The new building is just a short distance away from Second Harvest's existing 83,000 square foot distribution center on Front.

The new second building will add 13,000 square feet of additional warehouse space as well as a permanent home for a Bite2Go Volunteer Center. As well as flexible training space for nutrition education classes and space for some of their community partners.

Renovation work will begin soon with an official ground breaking next month. They also still have a bit to go toward their needed funding goal for the project. More info on this project and all that Second Harvest does in the Inland Northwest community, visit their website at-

Is there hope for a Chick-fil-a in Spokane?

Important- This not a definitive confirmation that Chick-fil-a is coming but it is a good sign!

Chick-fil-a has recently filled for a SEPA application with the state for a parcel of land near the Y in North Spokane. Perhaps the rumors of Chick-fil-a coming to the Gonzaga campus inspired something?

The application, which would be an early phase of development, shows a 4833 square foot store at the corner of N Newport Hwy & Hoerner, or 9304 N Newport Hwy. . In the plans the Chick-fil-a name is mentioned several times. Commenting on application is now open and closes on 6/21/19. In the notes it indicates construction could start as early as later this summer.

Will Chick-fil-a be coming to Spokane soon? It looks very good but we’ll be giving it a little more time to say for sure! If you’d like to view the SEPA documents on the project for yourself check-https://apps.ecology.wa.gov/separ/Main/SEPA/Record.aspx?SEPANumber=201903214

Stay tuned...
